I was told by someone at enjuku that the upper timing chain guide that bolts into the head was not needed. Is this true or should I start looking for that little guy?

technically it serves absolutely no purpose.. the other guides have contact with the chain. the very top "guide" doesnt. i left it cause it didnt have any affect on car either way

He speaks the truth. It's not needed, and tends to break and/or cause the timing chain to rattle against it. Pull the valve cover and it's two easy to get at bolts... done and done.

Yep, I took mine out and cut down out the timing chain rattle a lot. I recommend you do it.
