most likely the turbo's blown, take the intake snorkel off the turbo and feel for oil/shaft play.
if the car's misfiring you might wanna do a compression test to see if it's the headgasket.

i call it a snorkel
it's rubber, it's ribbed, it's a snorkel. call it a condom for all i care. if you're talking about the aluminum 45 degree ELBOW with a 2 bolt flange that has 2 12mm bolts that connect it to the compressor housing then you can call it an inlet or an elbow, or an INLET ELBOW or you can call it a bored individual who wants his 2 cents on a thread. if YOU can't fit your fat fingers in the inlet elbow to feel for shaft play and have to take the elbow off to check it then go right ahead. it makes no difference to me. if you wanna take the turbo off the manifold, and dissassemble it to check for shaft play go ahead.
focus on his issue, not my symantics thx, ur swap ain't even done. y are you correcting me?

smokes as soon as you start driving, not right away at startup, it has a fuel pressure regulator, i dont know what the setting should be, the guy that sold it to me also said the timing is off by a little, but it idles fine, the smoke is white, its pretty much stock except the fpr, fmic, and greddy bov

if your time is REALLY off by a little, then it shouldn't really smoke. you might be burning coolant, hence the white smoke. your HG might be done for. check your compression.

but if the hg was blown then there would be water in my oil right? i checked the oil and its clean, no choc milk, does anyone know the stock fuel press settings, would it make a diff if it was running a mines ecu

Checked the turbo yet? That and then do a compression check...

I believe the stock FPR setting is around 47.. it might be 43... I forgot. :S But call it 47... 4 lbs extra should not make you smoke so terribly that it is THAT noticeable.
White smoke is usually coolant burning...
The coolant passages on the SR are right next to the cylinders, and the oil galleys are further towards the edges, so you can be burning coolant through the head gasket without it failing near any of the oil passages. Perform a leak down test on the coolant system and see if it holds pressure, if it doesnt, start pulling plugs and look for wet cylinders after the test. If there are none, then I would check your exhaust system, sometimes when a Cat goes bad it starts accumilating water in the exhaust and voila, white smoke after the motor warms up. Eventually it burns off, but sometimes it can take a while. Also, is the gas good? Or has it been sitting around for a while? Condensation in gasoline that has been sitting around a long time without a stabilizer can cause a smoking issue. All things are good to look into.
If the turbo is blown, and you cant see anything on the inlet side of the compressor housing as far as movement, it does not mean that the seals inside havent gone bad... so check your intercooler piping for excessive amounts of oil.

From previous sr's I came across that smoke here are some issues that I have encountered from first to last place.
1. Blown turbo (these things take more dumps then elephants with a stomach ache...especially redtops from the early 90's.
2. Blown headgasket (just get old and needs to be replace, sr's run hotter then shit so they are known for this issue
3. Leaking valve seals (get hard or break from years of usage.)
4. Cylinder wall problems (rings get bent and cause oil to burn through combustions)
5. Foul spark plugs (running to rich)
6. Stuck injectors
7. Vacuum leak
I think thats pretty much it. Hope some of this info helps.

So a blown turbo could cause this? I have the same problem on my stock SR. I have perfect compression (150 in all four cylinders) , new and gapped iridium plugs, brand new fuel pump, new fuel lines, new fuel filter, new timing components, perfect timing, no boost leaks. I pressurized the intercooler system and oil started squirting out from between the timing cover and the head. I already had a small oil leak there, but should that happen?
The car pulls hard all the way to 4k or about 10psi at full throttle. If you gradually build boost and RPMs it runs fine.
Mine smokes after driving it for a while and letting it idle, i.e. stop lights. I'm not losing coolant, or oil, however I have lots of oil in the "snorkel".
Sorry to thread jack but it seems like we have similar problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to swap in an S15 turbo to see if that helps. I'll let you guys know.

well white smoke once again is usually coolant... be careful now because oil can burn a blue sometimes, which will make you think it is white... But yes a turbo can cause you to smoke.

is a leak down the same as a coolant system pressure test cus i did that today it held over 20psi with no drop in pressure, but im gonna check the plugs nd ic piping tomorrow

before u do anything do a compression check...or a leakdown test...check turbo, check valve seals......
I have some smoke every now and then to, sorta whitish i guess, its hard to tell. It only happens after a pretty long drive though, it seems. Perfect compression across all four cylinders, my plugs are dry, but they are pretty old. I bough a new headgasket, figured I might as well change it anyway, but I have a feeling its the turbo. I do get some backfire to though, anyone know why that would be?

^^Same problem I have. It only smokes after long drives. I'm waiting for all the gaskets and hardware to get here so I can put the turbo on.
I seem to be building boost just fine though. Could a bad turbo still build 10psi, then sputter?

I'm having the same problem! Burns white smoke from what I see. The turbo is fresh, not more than 1500miles on it. I'm going to do a compression test and see what's going on. Only been running 12psi for the last 500 miles on the car, hmmm... not losing any coolant

My opinion is to take it to a proffessional. my friend owns JER (Japanese Engine Repair) in Garden Grove. you can find their number phone book or internet. they are pretty familiar with nissans, swaps and all. they installed turbos on my 350Z and just recently bought an S13 and they help me alot. and they don't charge alot. I HIGLHY recommend you take it there before you do anything on your own. ask for Linh and tell him Gerard from this forum reffered you. Good luck!! plus the have a dyno there so they can diagnos your car!!!! Just take it there and you'll learn alot...
