Anyone know how to take apart an sr tranny? Do I have to take off all the gears on the back set to get to the front set? I tried taking it apart but I didn't get too far.

How do I get the ka tranny to work? Can I change the bellhousings or do I have to take the guts out of the ka and put them in the sr housing? And how is this done?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Same tranny's. Different bell housing. Just switch the bells and dont worry about gutting the tranny. Unless you have experience doing so your just going to screw your transmission up.

How do I change the bellhousing though and keep everything else intact. I've been search and coming up with nothing. Just that it will work but no one says how it will

Remove it. Simple as that. Nothing will come falling out or spring loose, the gear set is anchored together on the main plate.

there are 5 bolts 12mm around the tranny input shaft take them out then take the 10 -12mm bolts off oround the outside of the tranny swap the bigger lighter part of the tranny to the ka after repeating steps 1 and 2 on the ka tranny and thats it. Don't b intimidated its really pretty cheap and easy................like my ex girl friend.

they may look it, but they arent the same exact transmission. i've ripped apart both my sr and ka transmission. with the bellhousings off...they are the same. but with the rear casings off..thats when you can see the difference. the linkage between the sr and the ka is completely different. granted both will work on either engine (with the swap of the bellhousing of course) they arent the same innards as everyone is commonly told.

to remove the front bellhousing its pretty easy.

-after removing the clutch fork and t/o bearing assembly.
-remove the front plate that sites inside the transmission (5-6 bolts)
-then remove the (two?*) C clips that are around the main shaft.
-move to the center section, and remove the bolts that keep the center plate and front bellhousing together.
-very slowly, begin to seperate the bellhousing from the center section (using something thin..no a chissle!) make sure you dont go too deep and hit any of the innards of the tranny.
-scrape the old gasket material off both sides using a FRESH razorblade/clean rag+brake clean
-silicon it back together (rtv black) and just reverse the same steps.

heh I just did this last night.

one VERRRRYYYYYYYYY important thing to remember during reassembly.. dont force the bellhousing on as it WILL push the shift rods.. if the push rods are not in the correct location when reasembled you will only be able to shift into 1 -2 or 1 -3-r.. etc.. depending on what rod(s) was pushed in, it would lock you out of X gears.

When the Bellhousing is reinstalled the 3 shift rods should be flush with the mounting surface of the front plate. If not lift the bellhousing back off and pull/push the shift rods until they are all even

Also there is only one C clip that needs to be removed on the main spindle. The other C clip is if your going to replace the main drive bearing. After removing this C clip i would try to break the seal on the Bellhousing side so that you dont have to reseal the tail shaft side of the plate along with the bellhousing side.

I would suggest replacing the seal on the front cover(If bad) along with a fresh gasket for the front cover.

fun times in GA weather.. Hope it goes good for ya

your right about the 3 rods. after you've done all this..its good to double check their movement before you put the front cover back on. when you shift into first. one rod should go inward, and when shifting into second..that same rod should push forward. all three rods should do this. if it doesnt..you're not going into gear.
