I installed a KAAZ 1.5 way into my existing open diff and I broke it in properly, torqued everything down to specs, applied marking die to the ring gear and it is seated properly. I know I did everything right, but I drove my friends car last night and he has a KAAZ 2 way. His car is smooth, while mine clunks, pops, and makes all kinds of noise. We both have about the same amount of miles on them, 1K miles or so. The only difference I can think of is that his car was an SE that came with an LSD stock, and mine was a base model with an open diff. Now this would just be referring to the case, not the actual differential itself, correct? Other than that the only difference is that I have a 1 piece steel driveshaft, where he has the stock 2 piece. Any suggestions???

Different types of fluid? I hear non-synthetic doesnt lock as much (causes clutch plates to slip) compared to synthetic which locks really hard (prevents clutch plates from slipping)

we're both running the same KAAZ fluid.

To the original poster.. I wouldn't worry about it much, they're supposed to clunk and are relatively "harsh" when you're doing slow speed, big angle, part throttle turns... You changed the oil after the break in, right? I notice that every time I change the oil in my Kaaz it reduces the clunking and harshness for a while. You may wish to use a Type-F friction modifier with your next oil change, that should reduce the harshness a little (read on).
Psst fellow Kaaz owners.. If you don't want to keep spending the big dollars for OG Kaaz diff oil, check out the Torco RGO lsd oil (http://www.torcoracingoils.com/products/productview.aspx?id=d5d2bd7a-2331-4720-91c5-cb92901bda83). It's high quality oil suggested by Kaaz as an alternative to their own, yet considerably cheaper than Kaaz fluid:
Kaaz = $44 + shipping for 2L of oil
Torco = $21 + shipping for 2L of oil & 4oz of Type-F friction modifier (don't forget this stuff!)
Different types of fluid? I hear non-synthetic doesnt lock as much (causes clutch plates to slip) compared to synthetic which locks really hard (prevents clutch plates from slipping)
BTW on a Kaaz diff you should NEVER run synthetic gear oil, per Kaaz! Apparently the additives and crap in the synthetic oil can form a film on the clutch plates that deteriorates the diff. Kaaz themselves specifically say not to use synthetic.
DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC BASE OIL ON KAAZ LSD. Kaaz LSD may not function smoothly.

I changed the oil after break in with KAAZ fluid. I'm just worried since I will be entering my first drifting event next weekend and it is over 5 hours away.

I've put almost 1,000 miles on the car since, and if I did shim it wrong I would know by now. But like I said when we put the marking die on the ring gear it landed directly in the middle, NOT to either side.

I edited my post earlier you might have missed it... Next time you change your oil try using some Type-F friction modifier.
Don't worry about the harshness for your event, it will be fine if you broke in the diff properly & changed the oil afterward. GL!

Yeah, when i first put in my kaaz 2-way i was worried also it clunked and popped i thought some thing was messed up but i talked to kaaz usa and the guy told me its perfectly normal and that if it didnt do these things then something might be wrong, so dont sweat it good luck drifting.

Watch out your car is going to blow up!!!!!!
Just kidding. You should just get used to it. Everyone's does that. Some are quiet and some aren't. My friend Justin has the same LSD as me but he uses different diff fluid. His shit is stupid loud while mine isn't.

Its the other way around. Synthetic slips more.

^agreed.
I change my fluid out, every 6,000 miles, and immediately following a drift event if I participate.
Its an ATS Deftforce 2-way "R" and I use only NON-SYNTHETIC GM 75/90w gear oil w/ friction modifier.
But to address your worries, OP, don't worry about it. My LSD locks in ANY turn when the slightest bit of torque is applied, it pops, knocks, etc..etc.. Its just something you have to deal with :P
