I know theres some really good 401k's out there but mine totally sucks. Basically I just recently understood what it ment to have a 401k so I was excited to see what variables my company offered. Unfortunately it was $0.50 for every $1.00 up to 4%. Thats SUPER weak.

401k 101 Lecture:

$0.50 for every dollar means exactly that, every dollar you save they give you $0.50 cents for it, for free! Thats why dollar for dollar is the best!

up to 4% means you can save up to 4% of your xx paycheck. So if you get paid $1000 every week you can put $40 into your 401k. And dollar for dollar on $40 is $40. So for that week alone you save $80. Do that every month and you can save up to $320 a month! Thats $3840 a year!!!

And remember this is only 4%. Imagine those bastards out there that get up to 8% and dollar for dollar? Wow....

Are you one of those bastards???

mine's actually worse than yours. 50 cents on the dollar, up to 2%/paycheck. i still use it, of course.

$0.50 for every $1.00 up to 6%
I thought that was pretty weak until I got layed off...now it's $0.00 for every $1.00 up to 0%
I was at Castleberry's until the recall

My old company had a decent 401k, It was 1/1 up to i think 10%. But it was working in an ice cream freezer at -35, thats the only way they could keep employees.

My current job has a 401k, but i havent looked into it much. Id rather take that money i would have invested and throw it at my mortgage. Real estate is much less volatile and has great returns. Plus people always need a place to live!!

yeah, while i use my 401k, i still throw a small percentage of my weekly check into stock. i shoot for a 5% increase every two months. sometimes i reach it, sometimes not, but it's more lucrative than just saving cash.

this is a terrible way to save for retirement. Look at the housing market now, no matter how much of your mortgage you have paid down, chances are you wouldn't get what you want for your house right now. Saving in a 401k plan that has any type of match is never a bad idea. Think about it, if they match .50 on every 1.00 up to say 4% for arguments sake, you save 4% and they give you 2%. It's like giving yourself a raise just by saving.

I have 1:1 for the first 3% and .5:1 for the next 3. But they also give you 3% into the 401K regardless on whether or not I personally put some in. :)

I work for the government. We have TSP Matched 1:1 to 5%. I contribute 20%, almost maxed out. We can only contribute up to 16G a year of our own money. I also get a 1% on top of that for FERS retirement.

Dollar for dollar up to 6% with an additional 4% yearly company contribution, which is ultimately 10%. This is if I get on salary. I'm told that some people in the company leave with multi-million dollar retirement packages. I'm sure they were just trying to butter us up to join the company though.
