Not exactly for a 240sx but for my dads toyota, but what's it matter
I gotta replace the rear main seal, just wondering about any pro's con's between
using an actual paper / whatever gasket
vs
RTV silicone gasket maker
or
even using both

just looking for suggestions or the why not this and that, which lasts longer/seals better, etc.

rear main seal shouldnt be RTV or gasket at all, it should be a metal wound coil that is circular surrounded by a thick rubber gasket.

^that's right. dab oil on it to make better seal ala oil filter. Seen mechanic put on a slight coat of RTV on one before too.

You should of know just by the name. Rear Main SEAL. If it was a gasket, it would of said gasket.

Yes

Front Main Seal (this is for an SR, but they have the KA ones also):
OEM Nissan Front main seal - SR20DET (http://www.frsport.com/Genuine_OEM_Nissan_Front_Main_Seal_SR20DET_p_7719. html)

SIGH! You said its leaking from the valve cover, REPLACE IT. Theres a Front main and Rear main. You can learn a lot just by looking into the FSM.

+1. or use common sense

clean of all the gunk
drive it around
note where its leaking from

theres a seal on the valve cover
silicone rtv seal on top and bottom front timing cover
front main seal
oil pan
oil pressure sender (by oil filter) can spurt out oil as well.

pinpoint problem and replace/repair accordingly
