Hello,
I'm looking for a good turbo to put on a built CA18DET.
What options are best for a street driven and some drift/track time? I am told that the S15 turbo would be a great choice, because it's not that expensive, (compaired to my GT2871R on the Silvia) and spools very quickly, etc..
What choices would you recommend?

s15 turbo all the way. I wouldn't go any bigger on a street driven CA because you'll lose the fun factor.

im running a ball bearing t28 off an s14, great freakin turbo. if you are looking for over 300whp, stay off the streets haha. found out that its basically the same as the s15 turbo. the m24 1-2 markings on the compressor. just had mine rebuilt, brand new warrantied center cartridge, turbine and shaft for 325. if you want more power and the same spool time. ive seen a t04e turbo used. its a t4 turbo but he said it spooled just as quick as his old t28 and is good for 400+

In all honesty I've driven both motors built and stock... the ca (even if its bored up) is gonna respond SIMILAR to the sr... if it's a 1.9 or 2.0 then hey even better.
It depends on your money, but i'd go w/ a t3/to4e kit (if you can find a manifold... haven't been looking at ca parts for a while now).

Well, we have a T3/T4 .60-.63, the car was a dragger but we are going to make it a street car. The big turbo is way to much for what we wanna do.
GT2530 was listed for a few CA projects that I can remember but might want something more well known to use instead.

If your talking about the hks gt2530 that turbo is comparable to the s15 turbo. If you can get one for a good price go for it, but its doubtful you'll find one new for cheaper than a gt2871r or something of the like. Actually I dont think they still sell them anymore (gt2530). I think they replaced them w/ the GT-RS/GT-SS series. I'm not an expert on turbo sizing but i just used a turbo calculator and figured out the turbo i thought was good then talked to a few tuners. That helped me decide. I definately like wastegate over actuator type though (hence me pushing t3/to4e in my last post haha).

if youve got the right connecting rods, that motor can live past 4k with a decent size turbo. the puny rod bolts limit the ca of its revs and power limits. take out the weakest link and build a badass ca. get some cams/regrinds so you can make the power up there too. thats next years project. im going to push this little guy to its limits.

I know this is unrelated but how do you like your ca? Wish you had gone sr or stayed ka?

Well, the CA is built up, fordged internals, 272 cams 72# inj's, Z32 mafs, Prom'd ECU. It will be fun, but the clutch is slipping, and we took it apart to fix the oil consumtion, prolly a resleeve. I like my SR, almost the same things, but the fordged in ternals are next and I use a GT2871R on it. I also have a Turbo'd KA, with 50# inj's, Z32 mafs, Prom'd ECU , but I'm using a T25 for right now on 8psi. They are all fun, with the torque factor at it's highest with the KA, then SR, but when the CA is done then I will have to evaluate the standings again.

id like to know where you got the chra for the bbt28 and who rebuilt it for you. thats cheaper than i have heard anywhere not to mention that not many people at all rebuild bb turbos

The t28 is a very responsive turbo and very well matched to the CA. However, if you took the time to build up your motor then you are selling yourself short with the t28. An internally stock ca with proper fuel management will run all day at max boost on a t28. You may want to consider something larger to take advantage of your internals.
Another alternative is the t3 super 60. i just swapped my t25 for this turbo and love it. i am about to swap in my 550's and tune it at 1bar and that is on an internally stock ca.

A few years bac I had a bored up ca 18 (1850 CC) 180sx with VPC (remember I said a few years back, hahaha) 720 272 cams, I ran a gt3037S. I found it responsful, at 4500 and it carried all the way to 8500 boosting 1.7 bar. Nice turbo for the CA. 20G would also be a nice turbo, also coming in at the 4000 range. Fun on the street. You have lag, you are in the wrong gear.

yea and w/ 272's those aren't gonna help you at all w/ a turbo of the size you were asking about... just my opinion

a shop local to me got the parts for me. Precision turbo is where the parts are coming from. the shop is just putting everything back together for me. Its basically a brand new warrantied turbo i just kept my compressor and housings. 325 still doesnt sound right but thats what they charged me. if your interested i'll have more info on tuesday.
and for liking the CA? shit. i would never go back to KA or SR. i had to run mine with my wg wired open and ran .25psi. still felt better than any KA ive driven (stock ones anyway) the thing between the different motors is all in the powerband.
