There are only positive and negative options, but when a user doesn't have enough rep power to make a difference one way or the other or if they're already a half mile into the red themselves, whatever they leave will be a grey (neutral) square, no matter their intentions.

If there is no comment left, it was a Positive Rep attempt. You are REQUIRED to leave a rep for a Negative Rep.

Hm..
Then how do you get a "rep-power"?
I've tried to rep people for helping me with stuff and I couldn't ever give them a green square, they always respond with: "What's with the grey square?"
you're in the green now, you have a rep power of 2... if you have a rep power of zero and a green square then you give grey rep, if you have 1 and a green square you give 1 green point, it takes 100 points for a square.

"rep power" works like this:
1 point of power for every calendar year you're on the forum.
1 point for every 1000 posts
1 point for every 100 rep points
When your rep falls to zero or goes in the red, your rep power is zero and will always leave a grey square.
your "rep power" speaks to how many points you ADD with a POSITIVE rep, what you TAKE in negative is approximately 1/2 that (rounded down in odd-numbered situations)

Never would have thought this much was put into jut the rep power system. I couldn't imagine holding together a website as large as this one.
