MILWAUKEE - A couple who admitted locking a 7-year-old boy in his room with a bucket for a toilet while they watched Packers games at a casino received jail sentences Monday. Circuit Judge Jeffrey Wagner called the couple's actions "abhorrent" and ordered them to undergo psychological screening.

"What both of you did certainly shocks the conscience of the community," Wagner said.

Scott Scherer, 39, and Melanie Hardrath, 30, admitted locking Hardrath's son in his room with a loaf of bread, peanut butter and jelly, and a bucket that he would have to clean when they returned.

They had enough money to hire a baby sitter, said Assistant District Attorney Chris Liege, who showed the judge photographs of the couple's extensive collection of Packers memorabilia.

Wagner scolded Hardrath and Scherer, a former youth counselor, for not thinking about what would happen if the boy got sick or the house caught fire while they were at the casino.

He sentenced Hardrath to seven months in a county jail and Scherer to nine months. Both will serve four years of probation, with a stayed sentence of two years in prison and more extended supervision.

The couple also can't have contact with each other in the presence of the boy, now 8. He is staying with relatives.

The couple's defense attorney, Richard Johnson, said he couldn't explain their behavior.

"What do you do?" he asked the judge. "Maybe this coming football season, lock them in a room with a bucket and make them watch Bears games."

We fuckin take the Packers VERY SERIOUSLY here. Seriously.

No, but that is fucked up.

There was a similar case, minus the Packers part, recently in a near by county. They should have bamboo shoots shoved underneath their fingernails.

Oh and LOL at the judges Bears comment.

I swear you could make so much money with a daycare center near a sports arena. Only have to stay open during games.

Hell, if you had a day care place already. Offer season packages in addition to daily rates.

+1 for s14...

uhh... seriously. that is a freaking genius idea. Basically establish a daycare center with ticket purchasing capabilities. im pretty sure that would make bank

even better idea would be a sports bar with a daycare in the back, but i dont like the idea of people picking up their kids drunk.. n then driving off. its bad enough that they do it to themselves.

He had food, water, and a place to shit. There is nothing wrong with this scenario. Perhaps the 7 year old kid was the psycho one. Did anyone ever think of that?

lol, crazy story
My two younger brothers and myself used to get locked in the house while my Granda would go to the market because we were a handful for a single older woman.
We would of course climb out the window and wreck havoc. Lol, good times.

First: If he were the PSYCHO one then they shouldn't be leaving him ALONE in a empty house (his mental condition alone should be a red flag)

Second: The parents had money to pay a sitter, so why not dish out 30 bucks and have piceof mind? (Which was stated in the article)

Third: It's Illegal to leave a child at home alone especially for a prolonged period of time no matter what provisions the parents left for him/her.

fucked up....the human race has some seriously bad eggs.....Im glad the judge actually sentenced them instead of giving them a slap on the wrist. Some shit is fine but I got a big problem with people who fuck with their kids. Also if this is what they do to go out to a football game imagine what they do in other situations, or how they behave as parents in general

Oh snap. I guess I shouldn't have left the girls in the car the other day when Lisa and I went to Disneyland.

Honestly though - these people need to be sterilized and have their kid taken away. How do you reconcile with a child you've done that to?
'Sorry I cared too much about watching sweaty men fight over a peice of leather to give you proper childcare. My bad. I guess I should've arranged for some sort of minimal supervision or hell, I dunno TAKEN MY YOUNG SON TO A FUCKING FOOTBALL GAME!

Fuck people like that.

I gotta tell you though. Its not as bad as some of the other things ive seen. Does anybody remember that couple who had like 10 foster kids and they were making the kids stay in CAGES? Fucking cages. I swear, people like that should be sterilized, like mrmephistopheles said.

ppl are stupid. How anyone could do that to a kid is beyond my comprehension. Those people need to be taken back to the olden days and be burned at the stake after being dipped in a vat of what that kid was supposed to do in that bucket. Boo them.

AND they were Packers fans???? For shame.
