Okay, so I've been fighting an elusive CEL for a while now. I first thought it was a bad TPS, because of erratic shifts, and reving while cuising. Replace the TPS and those symptoms are gone, and the car runs great... but the CEL remains. I'm thinking now that it's an 02 sensor, but haven't got the codes read yet. Here's the confusing part though... yesterday on my way to work my car kinda bogged for a second, and the CEL started flashing. I didn't think too much of it, because I've had that happen in other cars. My old LC2 used to do it when hitting redline while it was cold. (hehe, the beauty of having a p.o.s. DD with a huge warranty) but then when I looked again I realized it was flashing a sequence. long 1, long 2, 3, 4, 5. Has anyone else ever seen this, It just continued cycling the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. It was even doing it when I got back in the car after work for a while, till it started getting warm, then it came on solid, and has been on ever since. Payday's on Tues, so I plan on getting an OBD1 reader for it so I can pull the codes, but just wondering if anyone else has encoutered this. *sigh* All this and I need it smogged by the end of the month. Anybody want to just give me a front clip?:-/

Car Details:
'89 XE Coupe, 200K+ miles on the Chassis, 2nd engine with probably 80k or so miles (ODO doesn't work) with an AT.

It would be a waste of anyones time to guess. Get the codes, then let us know whats going on/is needed.

The codes are there for a reason....... to prevent guessing/diagnostic work.

if you put the ecu in the proper mode it'll flash the codes to you. which is what it sounds like it was doing. looking up the code tells you what is wrong with the car.

i don't know if sohc and dohc are the same. but here is the dohc procedure just to give you an idea of whats involved (which is not much)

Well the problem was trying to check while the CEL was on. It would come and go at random. I checked the ECU with it off and got a 55. (No Malfunction) I finally was able to check it while it was still there.

Code 14: "Vehicle Speed Sensor Circuit"

The speed sensor is also what many claim to be the culprit of the disappearing HUD, but since my entire dash is out I don't think that'll be the only problem with that. but, we'll see...

Only problem is that it's a $100+ part. Not as easy as an O2. :(

Still baffles me as to why it was scrolling through the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" though. That was my main question was if anyone else had seen that before.

Also, are there any writeups on replacing the speed sensor? I'll seach as well, but figured I'd ask.
