my custom tails' what do u think?

well for some time now I've been wanting to make my own tail lights. after seeing the very nice but high priced kouki tails, i figured id alter my extra set of stock tail's. I've only done the right one so far which took 3 days, and would like to know what you guy's think, and if it was worth all the effort. well post up and give me some feed back. i still might do some more work to them and add a turn signal in the middle , so they look like r32 lights. but ill decide on that later.

well i looked every ware, and found them at some whole sale warehouse. 18 wheelers use a 4 inch light these are like 5 or 6.

I like that. I personally would have made the lights a little closer together (not much though it looks good still.) Was it hard to cut the holes in the lights without cracking the plastic? I know it can be brittle. What kind of blade did you use?

Another sand and paint will do wonders, the current finish looks like an ocean wave. Otherwise it's a unique attempt, much better than a lot of the shit we saw run through here.

those lenses look like the same that other people used to mod their taillights for the kouki lights look. can't you get them from kragen or something and tap screw those on? overall, it looks like the same way other people have done it, except it looks somewhat better because you painted the part around the two circles. others ive seen put those lenses on and used translucent red hobby paint over the whole tails and looked ugly.

good job. clean them up a little bit to make them smoother and they will look pretty good. i think a small rectangle turn signal in between them would look pretty good. that way it doesn't look like someone just vinyled over their stock lights. keep us updated with the finished product.

I started to do this with my coupe tails (because stock coupe tails are so bleh), with the LEDs from a trucking company - got 4 reds and 2 clears (that light up red) all for about $60 - problem was, coupe tails aren't tall enough, so I'd have to cut my trunk and fenders and smoothly glass in the excess - a shit ton of work. Also, I'd have to figure out what to do for the reverse lights...

originaly they were closer, but i planned on adding a small square or rectangle turnsignal in between them, to resemble skyline r32 lights. which i still might do. i am going to paint them the color of the car, i just used the black to give me a better idea of how it's going to look and to cover the stock lenses. as far as led's, the lenses are a little over 5 inches, and the only led's i could find were at 4 inches or smaller.

I think they would look real good like that if the whole rear bumper is white, but that means painting the rest of the car as well. And I dunno if your really to sacrifice the two tone.

yea, i have an idea. i might paint the center garnish around the 240/180sx lettering to match the tails and paint. I'm going to experiment with my stock one to make it light up and make the lettering stand out.

hey i hear ya man, i always respect folks that put in good work - i very much appreciate stuff like that.

however, the sucky thing about this industry.. is that people will always fall in love with the more pricier items, versus the stuff that is typically home-brewed. part of it is the exclusivity, the other part is the amount of perfection and detail put into more expensive production pieces.

like i said, its cool that you did all that work.. and its fun seeing stuff like this turn into reality. but when its all said and done, those universal lenses gotta go. in order to make this conversion really special, you should consider possibly using lenses off of a ferrari or lamborghini, something of that caliber. remember, its not just about how the car looks parked - you really outta think about how the lamps look illuminated, as those lights are solely responsible for the vehicles image at night.

yes... keep it white and shave the lines so it looks like one whole piece... center garnish + tail lights... don't put any indications that its a 180sx, 240sx or silvia... keep it clean.... and close to simple... simplicity is always best IMO... which is probably why most of my cars look mostly stock.... heh...

im going to ditch the old lens and cut a new piece out of some prismatic lens i have laying around. Then plastic weld the new pieces on. Thats what im thinking because theres no way to add onto the existing lens. For the middle piece, ill just cut off what i dont need and plastic weld a piece of plastic to cover what i cut off.

I think if you used traslucent black vinyl that they make for smoking lights instead of painting the housing black they would look better. But look good none the less.
