idle is very very low. i have a 1st gen sr20det, it has 3 inch piping, no cat, not resenator...do you guys think thats the problem?...and the car also really eats up my gas....i probably get about 15mpg  or less!!! it feels like the car is struggle to stay on, and every once in awhile it backfires really bad!, i mean pretty BAD about 5mph! i tried adjusting the throttle cable but the nut is all the way down so i cant go any further. is there a way to adjust the throttlebody?...
so far the motor is completely stock!, what size piping do you guy suggest?

i dont think it has anything to do with your exhaust, but i could be wrong

That sounds kinda close to my setup and mine runs good. I did have a problem kinda like that for a day. It was a vacuum leak. Made the engine run really rich, smell bad, and backfire a whole lot. It will make your car cut off at an idle if the leak is bad enough. Do you have a vacuum/boost gauge? If so, you could just look at that. Your vacuum should hold, at an idle, around -18 to -20 on the gauge. If it gets down to around -15, then it will start sputtering like its gonna cut off. Any lower than that and it prolly will cut off.

the car turned off about 20 times today lol, it sputters alot when i tap the gas in gear. and the idle goes up and down.im going to check for a vacuum leak tomorrow. car smells like gas and alot of smoke comes out when i haul ass, more light than dark. it smokes a little at idle aswell. car runs pretty good at woot though.
what can cause the car to backfire?...i take it easy in gear and when im about to stop bout 5mph (not in gear) it backfires like no other!

the bov is freakin loud even at about 2k rpm...just to through that in too.

do a tune up and go from there...
aka plugs,wires,filters

the guy who sold me the car also recommended me to change the sparkplugs....but is the bov supposed to be that loud?

well I know that light smoke is never good. you should prolly check your coolant for oil. Look in your radiator (put your finger down there or whatever) and check for any oil. If there is oil, you prolly blew your head gasket. Which would explain the smoke and sputter. Hopefully it is just dark smoke and a vacuum leak.
I don't know about the blow-off valve. Kinda weird.
+1 on checking spark plugs.

what kind of blow-off valve is it?

i hate to sound like a dick.. but if you do not know about the basics of turbo charged systems, why the fuck did you bother buying an SR powered 240? Just cuz drftng y0 is cool, doesn't mean you should jump on the band wagon.
Theres a ton of reasons why you could be running rich. Obvious 1st thing to do is check the ECU for codes. Sure, change out the plugs.. No reason not too. Hell, while you are at it.. Because you'll never know what the previous owner did and didn't do, change out the ecu temperature sensor, clean the maf and piping, retighten all piping, check all electrical connections including grounds, and go from there. Vac/Boost leak will have nothing to do with your car running rediculously rich. Hope this helps.

i was always into 240s but never had the chance to really buy one. i recently bought a 240 but you cant expect someone to know something they dont know about. im just starting from the beginning. and yeah im going to check up see if i can find a vacuum leaks. thanks

Yeah you pretty much sound like a dick. And having a vacuum leak will make you run rediculously rich. A vacuum leak will make the car do all that he said except for the blow off valve thing. It could be a lot of other things too but that would be the most simple problem. Don't hate on the kid for not knowing much about SR's. I'm sure you didn't know all about boost before you got one. I did the same thing this kid is doing. I got one without even knowing how a turbo worked. Throughout the years, I have learned tons about these cars. It might be a little more expensive doing it that way but you also learn a whole lot faster.

yeah he DID sound like a :mrmeph: LOL nah j/k, so its most likely a vacuum leak than?

it could be a lot of things but that would be the most likely problem if the car is blowing black smoke. if it is white smoke, it could be a whole mess of other problems. like i said earlier, check your gauges for vacuum. If you don't have a boost gauge, you need to get one.

well my car wasn't that bad but I have an NA sr and the timing was wayyyyy off and when it was adjusted the car hasn't died once.

yeah so i noticed that i got about 10 or so MPG!!!!!!!!!
so today i was in the freeway and im in 4k rpm, i tap the gas and it sputters and when i step on it A BIT car just wants to move....fast! really fast....i filled up my tank yesterday with 91 and half a bottle of fuel injector cleaner....and now its down to empty with 150km
RHD_sr20
07-07-2007, 11:18 PM
the guy who sold me the car told me to clean the throttle body and refill the gas tank with 91 and use that tank and then refill again so all the 'GUNK' can burn off.....is this going to help my MPG?...i dont even boost and its hauling gas like crazy

Do a basic tune up. Make sure you gap the spark plugs right. Then check to make sure you have no lose vacuums. Then check ecu for codes. It will probably be a vacuum or maybe something electrical. O2 sensor, maf, TPS. The list goes on.

check your timing.... doesn't sound like u have checked that yet. My first sr i had a smilar problem ended up being the cas someone put it in incorrectly so i put it back in the right way and the car ran fine.

And having a vacuum leak will make you run rediculously rich.
That's very much incorrect to my knowledge. A vacume leak will make the car run very much lean depending how big the leak is.
Here's my explantion: A vacume leak means there's a leak in either a intake manifold gasket, tb gasket, a vacume hose damaged or disconnected, pretty much anything that lets atmosphere air come in other than before the MAFS assuming u're running a MAFS which in this case he is.
With a vacume leak that means the engine is pulling in more air than the MAFS is reading meaning the engine will run lean (more air than gas mixture) which can cause some problems. I belive one of the problems other than running poorly could be that you could burn the vavles cause the engine runs much hotter when it's running lean.
I hope this lil explanation clear somethings up, please correct me if i'm wrong but like i said this is from what i have been learning over the years of working on all types of cars.

then a vacume leak might not even be the problem.... You're being too close minding (excuse me if i'm being mean don't mean to be but just trying to get a point across) check other things that might make it go wrong other than a vacume / boost leak.... like i said before check timing make sure it's correct. shit running rich could also mean u have a bad fps...

Maybe could be the Coolant Sensor for the ECU? I heard those go bad often after swaps

Manifold to Turbo Gasket, Check for leaks.
AFM, connection, have you seen the solder youtube video?
Intake mani gasket, start and idle the car, spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold seal to the head to ID the leak.
TPS, if its TRASHED this might be about right.
Coolant temp, last on the list, usually symptomatic of hard start and bad drive-abiliy.

what is the TPS?
when i start the car the idle goes upto 2k then down to 500 and then back up again to 1.2k then down....just goes up and down.
so it can be the intake manifold gasket leak?...or turbo gasket leak?..i will check for that....
also, when im driving, i keep the gas pedal steady (driving normal) and it starts puttering, and then when i step on it, it goes away and spools, but hesetates sometimes. psi feels good, i feel it pull, but when i let go of the gas (low or high rpm) 80% it dies out and turns off.
when i keep it in gear to slow down, it backfires really loud all the time. and again...i get around 10MPG :(

I'm not gonna argue with you kids. A vacuum leak will make your car run rich. It will cause black smoke and sputtering. As soon as you get out of vacuum (aka BOOST) it does not affect your car any more. But while in vacuum, your car will run rich. It wont hurt your car, but it will make is smell like shit and look bad. It happened to my car, found the leak, problem fixed. It has happened to a lot of SR's that I know of. I was taught this by a SR20 specialty shop that is very very good. I'm not saying thats what this guys problem is. Like I said earlier, this would be a simple, easy problem to fix and should be one of the first things you check for when your car is acting as described.
and if it was a boost leak, it wouldn't affect the car while at idle and non boosting times.

orangedonkey:
A boost/vacuum leak will cause rich running and bad idle, this is in part to the Air Flow Meter metering air that is not reaching the combustion process.
TPS = Throttle Position Sensor.

so i took my car to clockwork performance (if anyone knows them :P) and they cleaned out the throttle body and they replaced the plugs and redid timing and did some vacuum lines. Car seems alooot better now. doesnt turn off but it still sputters at a certain rpm. car is not running rich anymore but they told me that its running lean uptop so they told me to take it to Marco Vargas from sr20 parts. (almost all his cars were featured on super street :O) i got there and there was a true silvia K's and a 2nd gen skyline and a sr swapped 510. it was awesome, they were rb26's everywhere!! lol, i met marco and hes a cool dude, he checked my car and unfortionantly he was a bout to close and asked me to leave the car since the car idles high but then tries to die out when im driving so he going to check it out for freeee.....
so thats the story guys....hahaha i hope everything turns out cool.
