whats the most you can spend? ebay may have something that would work for you.

Basic ideas.
1. The bigger the tip, the ricier the sound
2. the smaller the canister that actually lowers the sound, the louder your car is
3. All the companies that make shiney mufflers (apexi, obx...) are more conserned with flow than loudnes... so i wouldn't be getin one of those...

I'd look for something resembling the stock muffler

Uhhh I'm going to have to disagree w/ Kreator here... I don't think OBX is all that interested in flow characteristics of their mufflers; they're just interested in making shiny parts at low cost. That generally goes against 'the flow' of your argument there... ha. ha. (get the pun?) never mind.
Apex, HKS, Trust and Blitz, on the other hand, take all aspects into account, INCLUDING sound. I am led to believe that they put a substantial amount of money (R&D) into sound tuning their exhaust systems whereas OBX, APC and Arospeed probably don't.

OD a search or go back 5-10 pages. This thread came up just a week or two ago. In general power gains and quiet don't belong in the smae senetence when looking at exhausts. Elimination of the cat is good for a few decibles too. Why did you remove it? Keeping a functional cat is free, now you'll have to buy a new one, the definition of not saving money.

Hmm maybe. But honestly i haven't found many companies that sell just mufflers except OBX and reactive(or somthing). Apexi got like 2-3 mufflers total. same with 5zigen.

Honestly, when i'm thinking of mufflers, i'm thinking the usual mufflers you see on imports versus the flowmaster/dynomax/magnoflow ones. I've seen both types. If you look inside the import muffler, it's just a straight running pipe through from inlet to outlet. If not for the holes, it'd be as free flowing as a straight pipe. dynomax on the other hand has a z type muffler, where the exhaust trevels in a z-like fasion. Now those things really lower the sound. Cost performance though. Anyways, i'm getting myself an obx muffler ($35 w/ shipping if everything works out) I'll tell you what i think. If it's a piece of crap, i won't loose much

P.S. honestly, i think that OBX is at a higher level than APC. I mean I don't see there decals on every mexican car. Plus they got some decent stuff like short shifters and stbs.

my N1 style muffler i got off ebay for around 70 bucks shipped workeds good. Doesn't sound to bad, not very loud but i didn't want a fart can i just wanted a little more aggresiive.
pacesetter offers a almost full piping kit for 130 something i think, just weld on a N1 style or soemthing a little quiter and you ahve a newere exhaust system
