View Full Version : 300zx caliper upgrade...weird brake problem

Just finished installing a full 300zx brake upgrade, front and rear. I'm using the correct lines for the front and rear. So here's the deal, I bled the hell out of the lines and I still can't get any pedal pressure. Sometimes I can get a little if I pump really fast on the pedal but then it fades almost instantly.

I've also checked for leaks and whatnot, the brake fluid tank does not go down with pedal pumping which seems to indicate there is no fluid leaks in my system.

One of the calipers in the front was making a weird snapping sound occasionally and I thought it might be shot, so I put the stock caliper back and still no pressure. Help!

Did you upgrade your brake master cylinder to a Z32 one? The 240sx BMC has some problems pushing 12 cylinders around...also I dono wtf it was but I heard somthing about mounting your calipers upside down or somthing? But if you didnt upgrade the BMC then try doing that.

I was thinking the same thing about the BMC...The calipers are mounted with the bleeding nipples at the bottom.

there's your problem.

air nipples should be at the top.

Would that really cause no pedal pressure? I'll give it a shot anyways.

i dont think you can bleed them all the way if the calipers are upside down.

air is lighter than water. and brake fluid for that matter.

with the bleeder on the bottom, there is still a pocket of air trapped in the top of the caliper. the only way to get it out is by putting the bleeder on the top and letting the fluid push out the air.

word just like trying to mount a coolant temp sensor on the bottom of a hose...

just realized this is Austin. supposedly theres someone in WV putting a 2jz into a s13... it's in but was asking how to wire it lol

I didn't think about it that way...for some reason I recalled reading that the nipple should be at the bottom but apparently that isn't the case! I'll give this a shot tomorrow morning.

hahaha, wassup man.

i'm not doing anymore goofball swaps like before. after 2 7MGTE swaps in cressida's, my GZE swap, and that 2.5->2.0 Subie swap, i won't do any more unless i do a standalone and harness IE megasquirt.

let us know how your brakes feel with the stock MC. should be sufficient to get them to work ok, but i don't have first hand experience with stock MC/z brakes so i'd be interested to see what you think.

yeah, i'll help but you gotta figure out a way to get that EDIS ring on your crank pulley :P

that's why i'm waiting for the newer version to come out that'll allow me to use my stock CAS/wasted spark. my gze needs a lot of help after all of my mods and runs like poopie. c'mon MS! i'm not putting a fuggin huge ass EDIS ring on my NEVO pulley.

if nothing else i'll swap out my CAS and coilpacks for red/blue top dist/coil....w/e, i'm doing the whole harness myself so next to no harness.

That was definitely the problem...makes me feel like a douche for making such a stupid mistake but I suppose that's what I get for working late at night when I'm already about to pass out.

It's too early to say whether or not the BMC is too small or not, I think I'm gonna upgrade it anyways.

z32 mc helps out a lot, you can get by with the stock one though. feel is deff. better with the z32. and yes bleeder ALWAYS goes to the top.
