View Full Version : odd radiator hose/ coolant direction issues

It was my understanding that coolant flowed OUT of the engine through the upper radiator hose, and INTO the engine through the lower radiator hose (thermostat housing hose). well after an event today I was feeling my hoses and the lower one was very hot to the touch, tough to keep holding it for 5+ seconds. The upper one however, was luke warm. How can it be that the hose that is supposed to be going INTO the engine is the hot one, and OUT hose of the engien is cold?!?!?!

related issue that suggests something is fishy - since my swap ive tried 3 different electronic water temp gauges and all have the same symtpon. Warm up with the engine to about 140* then drop to 100-105 after a few minutes (thermostat has opened). occasionally it'll go up to 150ish if I run it hard then cool back down, sounds more like its reading the out temperature of radiator other than the out temperature of the engine, which confirms the hand touch issue.

I have tested the thermostat in boiling water when I got it, and I installed it correctly with the nipple ontop. also, the gauge activity suggests that it's opening becuase when the in-dash gauge gets to the middle my aftermarket gauge drops to 100-105 like I said. The only thing I could possibly think of is what if SOMEHOW I got the wrong water pump that spins backwards? I don't even know if that is plausible, any help is appreciated.
