Hey,

I got this 91 hb with 70k on it. I dont know anything about the car. Now, these are the problems with the transmission:

1. if I stay in 2nd until 6k or so, when I take it out to put it in 3rd, it seems like the shifter "jumps" out of 2nd, as if it was just about to jump out of the gear by itself.

2. I am in 3rd and push the shifter ahead. (the transmission is in 3rd, I just push the shifter ahead some more, gently). Now, feeling the shifter as I described, I press on gas all of a sudden or I lift off the gas all of a sudden. Well, suprise, the shifter MOVES by itself ahead or backwards (depending on me accelerating or lifting off gas)!!! WTF?! It doesn't do that in any other gears...

3. a couple of weeks ago I had a friend of mine to drive my car and I sat on the back seats (not comfortable, lol !. Well, in 2nd I hear this noise coming from the undercar (never heard it while driving the car myself). I think it comes from the differential or something like that. The noise is harsh and dissapears when you shifht it in 3rd.

4. if I am in 2nd or 3rd and pass over some tuff bumps on the road I hear these knocking sounds towards the back of the car (the differential?! and the car jerks. The car behaves like I would clutch in and out while still on gas (even though I don;t touch the clutch and I keep my foot on the gas constant). I ended up liftin off the gas while going over bad bumps or puting it in Neutral alltogheter.

Does anybody know what's going on?

Thanks

1. that is totally normal, should do it in every gear at that high rpm but it seems to do it more in the lower gears. Nothing wrong there...

2. No clue what that is but mine does it too, not sure if its only 3rd or all gears but I know 3rd for sure jumps when you change the ammount of gas rapidly. Again though...nothing to worry about I don't think.

3. "harsh" isn't good enough grind/scrape/rattle/squeal/etc...? You said it's comming from the rear, or can you not tell? could it be comming from up front more, maybe the tranny? Often times at certian rpms and certian situations, various heatsheilds on your exhaust system can rattle against your exhaust making a grinding or rattleing sound from anywhere from the front of your car to the middle (rear passangers feet...around there).

4. your losing traction with the road over the bumps...slow down

hope that helps a bit...

Hey,

I don't normally post over here cause i don't know anything, but if while your driving and you hit the higher rpms and just let off of the gas does it pop out of gear???

If it does pop out of gear:

I installed a Pilot short shifter and it did that and all I had to do was adjust the tightness of the screws. If you just bought the car maybe the owner put one in and didn't tell you about it. Just a thought.

thanks a lot for your answers.

DSC,

I can definitely say that the transmission in this car is not as smooth as in other cars. I got worried about all the things cause the previous owner (the only one, a female) didn't tell me that the car was painted. I fgured she painted the car bevause of this bad accident or something (the title is clean, BTW).

It is very difficult to describe the noise the tranny makes in 2nd (and that can be heard only if you sit in the back seats. It is not squeal, not rattle (as in shields or exhaust, I have these too, but they're different). It is definitely connected to the transmission (clutch in, dissapears, different speeds do not affect, only in 2nd only at certain rpm). It is a continuous noise (if you mantain the rpm) that made me think I ran out of oil in the differential or something. Like some rusty wheels inside the diff are making the noise.

Dave,

it does not pop out of gear (yet, just feels as if it was just about to). I don't think the 45 year old lady that had the car since new changed any stock part for performance or whatever. The shifter looks completely stock to me.

damn, the engine runs so nice, the car drives beautifully and the it has low miles and everything! This tranny thing worries me to the point that I consider selling it (and, of course, buying another 240). And then, I think again, maybe it's nothing...

Any other thoughts will be appreciated.

thanks
