You'll pick up 30hp just with the headers, the VH manifolds are some of the nastiest ones on the road. Nice work.
gsracer
04-10-2007, 09:42 PM
After trying every possible way to fit it, i decided that turbo at least for now was to time consuming not to mention difficult. lol
The car will be getting custom cams, head porting and Individual throttle bodies.
Goal is 380-400 whp N/A. more than enough power for a track (road race) car.
As for motor mounts, i did what most vq guys do. Just used a hockey puck and made my own bracket to put the motor as low as possible and as far back as possible. The motor is 2 mm off of the crossmember

nice work man. got a few questions that i havent seen addressed in your original post.
1.) why that motor and not VQ or even LS1
2.) last i checked there was no real aftermarket for that motor, so what are your plans for making 350-400whp NA
gsracer

Funny you should ask, If you look in the for sale section, you will see my built SR20 for sale, i didnt even use it, just got bored of it.
1. I have an unlimited supply of free motors since my father in law owns 3 junkyards. Plus points for different, keeping it nissan, etc.
2. Custom cams and head work and a short runner intake manifold or itbs will get me there, the motor should be at 290-300 whp in the form it is in now. If all else fails, I have a vortech V2 that will get me there and more

iirc that motor was rated at 275bhp unless a later model nissan had more power added to it. but when i was introduced in early 90's in items such as the q45 it was only 275bhp. which nets somewhere south of 240whp. hopefully you can make another 60whp on cams and a good manifold, but i wouldnt hold my breath on stock compression.
props to you man, especially on the headers. makes me not complain so much about the ls1 headers on my car =p
gsracer
04-10-2007, 11:35 PM
You are correct sir, stock power was at 278 hp at the crank.
However it is rumored to be under rated from the factory.
The q45 guys are getting 230 whp stock ,250 whp with exhaust to as much as 290whp with headers and exhaust. All thru the stock auto tranny.
I hope this motor gets to at least 290 whp

cool deal. well if it all fucks off then im sure you can find a 5.3 lq motor out of a truck in your dads junk yard. those motors make the same hp as an ls1 just less touqre. not a bad option for a junkyard build IMO.

I think his connection is a wrecking yard, not a jdm junkyard.
Dude Hockey Pucks ftw. We used Hockey pucks on this S12--> VG30DE Swap that just got banged out. So you were 2mm off slot line up? Does not sound bad at all. Dremel!
We were thinking of doing a manual trans swap on a friends q. This is shaping up to be the same only MUCH lighter. It sucks that you wont feel the before and after of the headers, it is a HUGE difference.... oh that and Nitrous. This engine LOVES nitrous.
Turbo...? Short of a low compression rebuild and some serious management, Rear Axle mount? Have to keep it V8 Style.
Reasons why VH45>LS1:
Over Head cam, IE 4 CAMS.
Much Higher Redline.
Lighter.
Nissan.

With some VH45de (might have been a vh41de)swap they notched the frame rails AND still had clearance problems with the hood... how difficult was fitment for you?
also, what modifications to the crossmember did you do if any?
last up, how much modification was required to mate the tranny to the block.. besides the adapter plate thing for the belhousing (that guy who did the maxima engine had to mill tons of little spacers and stuff to make it work)

I had to notch the frame rail on the pass. side for the alternator to fit
No modifications where made to the crossmember.
A simple adapter plate is being fabbed up by mazworx as we speak, similar to there SR to VG adapter plate.
No clearance problem with the hood, it closes with room to spare
I made the mounts outside of the car on a spare crossmember, Took the KA out bolted it in. In the end I was only 1/16 of an inch off in my measuments, I have already corrected the measurment.

wow sounds like a great build... what are the costs of all this.. i know vh's are much more affordable than other v8 alternatives
when the build is complete you should sell spec sheets of what is required..(to me at least haha) where to notch.. a design for the adapter plate.. wiring.. mounts ..ect
with all the r&d out of the way.. i just might be able to con a mechanical engineer friend to do the grunt work

lol its already documented, not to mention no one is going to pay for anything like that. i could count for days how many PM's my freinds and i get on how to do the ls1 swap and wanting to pay for instructions and parts. hell look at hinson. it will be a while before they make anything off their lsx 240 setup. which is why the current parts are all booboo.

"czech republic" rofl, thats awesome...
damn dude the red wrinkle paint makes the motor look great! nice choice on that for the valvecovers and well done swap work, nice to see someone put forth the effort for equal length manifolds. your car is going to be insane this year, do you have any magazine coverage in the works? because you should, your car is the tits on those wheels and with that v8 under the hood.
I'm excitied to see a non-LS1 v8 under the hood and to see how much power you can make with that motor. how hard is the wiring for your swap and how easy is that ecu to tune?

You'll pick up 30hp just with the headers, the VH manifolds are some of the nastiest ones on the road. Nice work.
they have tubular headers stock dude... nothing compared to the custom ones but pretty tight for stock.
so how is clearance with the brake booster? you running the OEM s14 booster or what? I know the S13 one is a bit thinner...

this is fuel the project we have taken up. rebuilt VH in a coupe with megasquirt and custom plenum. i have to hand it to you, thats definately a sick car. kinda curious why you went with that water pump setup though. good luck dude. hopefully ours turns out just as nice as yours. those headers pwn
nice mod - always thought someone would eventually do something crazy like this.
wonder what something like this would run - any if it would be remotely close to smog legal in cali - i'm sure you could make it, but not sure with the headers.
but again good luck with the transplant and more pics please!!
ch1873857

the vh had pretty much tubular headers from the factory but had a lot of emissions junk that if you take out you would probably fail smog, emissions, whatever

Yep - but I'm sure it (legal swap to VH) can be done.... that would definately be the final mod for my vert. Even without any crazy mods I figure you can easily get 250 at the wheels...
Not sure about the powdercoating though - I know it has nothing to do with emissions, but I can see that as a CHP magnet :) I'd keep it bone stock - no chrome parts, keep the infiniti engine conver and all...

Hey GSRacer, do you follow SuperGT? All GT500 class Nissan machines run this engine. Good enough for Super GT, good enough for me :)
Couple of questions.
Did you consider the VQ35DE engine?
What tranny options did you consider?
Why did you replace the timing chain?

I did consider the vq but thats another boring swap, i have a freind with a twin turbo vq in an s14 already
Tranny option in my mind was only one z32 tt 5 speed
Timing chain was replaced because they are a known failure in this motor.

The fittings are made by earls , russell, and aeroquip. They are called nickel fittings. They are considerably more exspensive than the reg ones.
The hose is braidied nylon and is 1/3 the weight of stainless steel, its only about 3 dollars more per foot.

Havent posted any updates in a while, been busy with work.
I took the car to a drift event a couple weeks ago, handled great, didnt notice the extra weight at all, it only ended up being a little less than 100 lbs total. Ill offset that when i get my light weight battery and carbon fiber hood.
Been driving it on weeke ends and stuff, biggest problem i have is that since the motor is so wide, theres no where for the heat to go, so im gonna have to pick up a vented hood to get rid of some of the heat, all in all im pretty happy with the car as of now.
Anyways the more or less finished product for now, till i get my, nw motor, cams and itb's.
Got the power steering and expansion tank hooked up finnally

I am actually curious to know any future maintenance developments, any other options to a clutch; flywheel options at all, anywhere close by for the VH45DE. I understand smoky ran something of an Ogura clutch. possibly an OSGiken opportunity, how is the differential working out for you so far.
Very smooth build my friend. you have the patients of a Japanese pebbleman (the guys that rake those little pebbles in such a manner, it soothes you him and the blasted pebbles themselves!)

Its a holset h2c like a big t4. Unfourtantly i cant for the life of me get twins to fit. So as im stuck with a single i just want to see how wack it would look , unfourtanly its either this or a vortech. I think this has less wackness than a vortech thats for sure. As for this turbo its just for fitment purposes. Im havent really decided what turbo to run yet but probably something in the t4 twin scroll area.

My understanding is that there is no gain to be had from a twin scroll with 8 cylinders, so keep it simple. And v8s with turbos are not capable of looking, "kinda whack." Bad ass I say. Keep it up!

What would you have to do for engine management with the turbo?
And were you dissapointed with the n/a power?

Twin 30Rs up in the front tubs.
exhaust runs over the valve cover. (v-banded it wouldn't be too big of a bitch and wrapped of course)
headers run below the valve cover.
looks like you have room for it just glancing at it, someone did it in an S13.
Get someone to make you an intake manifold, that shit is not so fresh at all, and will if you had it going through the middle with the rad laid down a little (vetteish) would make it perfect for two intercoolers.

03-01-2008, 11:45 PM
Mmmmm OHC V8 turbo sounds are instant turn-ons.
McRussell had some good suggestions. I vote yes on the new intake mani, it would open up the powerband and give you more room to work with (throttle body location and such). Two twin-scrolls would be nice. Only with some crazy tube manifolds though.
Single would work though too. Easier. Just make sure you ceramic coat everything, that engine bay is packed.
Love the fact that you're keeping the VH.

You might want to consider an STS turbo style install. They mount their turbos mid to rear of the car for fitment and cooling purposes.

http://i.b5z.net/i/u/1473169/i/c6%20corvette/img_2180.jpg
The turbocharger can be mounted anywhere but is typically placed under the vehicle so running the exhaust to and from the turbocharger (depending on your design) is as simple as replacing a muffler and can be done by any competent exhaust shop. Once the turbo has been installed in the exhaust system, the intake tubing can be fabricated to run from the compressor outlet up to the throttle body. In most cases, the intake tubing acts as a linear intercooler and will provide 40-50% intercooer efficiency with almost zero pressure drop if designed properly. If you are looking for optimal horsepower per pound of boost, adding a front mounted intercooler to your remote mounted turbo system will provide 90% to nearly100% intercooling efficiency.

Extremely nice swap! I don't agree with boosting it though. No turbocharged or supercharged engine can match the power delivery and ultra flat torque curve of a well-built v-8. With ITB's the top end would be bitchin as well. How does this motor compare in size/weight to an LSx? Anybody know? And what about the VQ35 as well?

this is really the only way to do it on a VH45 IMHO. For best weight balance, space, and heat issues nothing really beats the rear mounted turbo, and based on from what I gathered it is TECHNICALLY legal as long as you keep stock cats.
this is based off of information from a friend of mine who has a turbo z28 Camaro
running 11 pounds of boost and putting close to 400ish hp
SicBastard
03-03-2008, 08:14 AM
Rear mounts are bullshit.Your turbos become completely dependent upon some weak ass electric oil pump and the amount of heat energy wasted in the exhaust is rediculous. You keep seeing them on v8s and v6s because with their inherent torque people just don't realize/accept all of the midrange that they are giving up.You've already built a great exhaust, you should really reconsider a centrifugal. Don't rull out a supercharger just because zilvians think turbos are cooler. Also the way that the stock lower intake manifolds creates a flat plane is just begging for you to fab-up an upper plenum/air2water ic/mount for a cobra eaton. $600 and you're looking at 500 hp and your radiator worries would be gone because the air2water ic requires only a small heat exchanger out front.Keep moddin Bro! It all looks great!

I think I have figured out a pretty efficient way to get twins to fit here. I actually got two ideas I'm working on. It should look pretty baller and work well either way. I'm also thinking about doing a rear mount radiator ala dentsport to get some weight back over the rear.
As for rear turbo I never really liked the idea of rear turbo seems like its less than optimal.
And I definitly won't be going with any of the gt class turbos. I'll probably get twin t3/t4 or t3/60-1. I have instant torque as it is so its really a non issue IMO.

Picked up a garret t3/60-1 from a friend and got my merge collectors to try to come up with ideas. The down pipe can only go over the valve covers and down the back, but manifold wise i got few options.
I could run a baller stainless tublar manifold and make it look all types of bad ass but as you coul see i would have all kinds of fitment issues. .. pic
