View Full Version : DEFI water temp install for S14 SR?

So I'm torn between 3 options for hooking up the sender for my water temp gauge on my S14 SR motor.
1)Get something like the greddy water temp adapter.
2)Get a "custom steel" water adapter sandwich

3)Is it possible to drill and tap the stock water neck and hook up the sender that way?
From what I have read the closer to the motor you get the sender the more accurate it is going to be, Correct? If so the water temp sandwich would be a better route to go, opposed to the adpater that hooks up to the upper radiator hose. Does anyone have any input on my last 2 options, the sandwich plate or drilling and tapping the water neck?

Sitck with the upper rad hose adaptor.

I got the Juran adapter from SPL. its curved so it makes install easier.
Then I didn't put teflon tape on it so I had to take it off in a 711 parking lot so that coolant didn't fuck up J5s apartment driveway.
it was dope.
you can put it in the waterneck if you have the right taps.

Why though? If I were to run the sandwich plate I could effectively get more accurate temps, hide the sender, and aesthetically have a cleaner engine bay, just a thought.

for the cost of the adapter I could easily go down to my local hardware store, get the drill bit, and tap and probably still have money in my pocket. My main concern is, is that a common thing for people to do? Is there even enough metal there to drill and tap it?
Whats the juran adapter? I looked on the SPL site, but didn't find it.

Drilling the waterneck will weaken it. A machine shop drill and tapped a hole for my coolant hose on the turbo and I cracked it while tightening it down.
Stick with the adapter then... good choice

Call SPL and ask him for the Juran curved hose adapter.
I think they're out of stock but hes getting more.
I tapped my coolant neck for a greddy expansion tank. do it where the oem bleed hole is if you're gonna do it

i was trying to find another thread but i stumbled upon this thread.
i'd just stick it on the radiator hose. simpler that way. but if you insist on having it look "clean" and getting the "most accurate reading" what can i say, right?
to add: i'd only tap the neck for an expansion tank like above

I'll email SPL tonight and see what they say. last time I checked though the adpaters they have are tapped for BSPT?
So it looks like the idea of tapping the water neck may not be such a good route.
What about the sandwich plate, does anyone have any experience with these?

I had my waterneck tapped on my s14sr and have had no prob. for 1 1/2 yrs. cost me free $'s.

1) This is the best way because if you screw up the worst you have to do is get another radiator hose.
2) This does not clear the power steering pump.
3) I do not recommend this. S14 SR water outlet is very rare. I would not risk doing damage to this part.

I have the blitz cooler hose, which has an piece for a water temp sensor molded into it and mine works awesome.. No problems what so ever...
under the exhaust manifold there is a plug to drain the coolant from the block. that would be the "cleanest" look as you can't really see it. :P
