So over on honda-tech, a guy is interested in trading my 4dr civic for a 1993 240sx.
the 240sx is white, 114xk miles, 5 speed wiht 0 rust. its the SE edition fastback.
Im nervioius about trading somebody my daily driver for a 93 with superlow miles like this. He wants to put the car on a trailer to bring it up for the trade, since supposidly he doesnt have a CDplayer, and doesnt wanna put miles on it.
He says it runs fine bla bla bla, but why wont he just drive it? anybody have anymore experience on situations like this? Should I just avoid this all together?

ask for as many pics as possible or go see it before the actual trade

yea after reading i dunno If I should trade now, because he's 19, probably tried drifting. Ive never redlined my car, hit vtec, hit anything. However a nissan is the car ive always dreamed of, and the chances of finding a nice 240sx is hard i guess, in MN there is nothing. This guy is comming from kansas.
Im mainly worried about overheating, and oil leaks, because I cant afford to be stuck in IOWA or something.
If he does drive it up there, should i take a chance and do the trade?

well, in all honesty, my civic looks amazing from the outside, but it has alot of issues. Suspension is all shot, interior is from like 4 different cars, engine has alot of miles on it.
So i wouldnt be so concerned, but ive never owned a 240, and alot of kids beat teh crap outta them, and for some reason he doesnt wanna drive it up here, red flag i guess....

eh, i would say test drive the car first....and umm...most likely the 240's beat...who would go from rwd to fwd??? unless he's a honda person....b/c when i let my brother drive off w/ my 1995 s14 and i kept his 95 civic ex, it's like OMFG it takes FOREVER to pass someone......zzzzzzzz.....check out his car first, or call the dude and ask for Vin, and get carfax....

what year is your civic? but really if your gunna upgrade your 240, its not the most reliable car, its a bad ass car, but if your gunna push the 240 like i do, just remember its bound to break down, and be ready for it

04-03-2007, 11:20 PM
yeah like jakal, and kdashy said, test drive it and have a mechanic you know look at it, that's all i can think of too. but if you have lots of cash to spend then that may be a different story.

Like I told you on H-T, keep the Civic. Save up for a better condition 240 (I saw the pics). Keep reading up here.

That's the stupidest comment yet. No car is "bound to beak down" if you maintain it. Abuse the shit out of it thought and sure, any car will have problems, 13years old or not.

carfaxing is a good thing to do, but its by no means by itself a comprehensive way of checking out a car. it doesn't tell you things not reported to the dmv. for example, i had my crx stolen once and then recovered. that should mean its a salvage title. however, carfax still shows my crx as a clean title several months after the theft incident. its a good filter to use as a first step, but its not a very accurate tool to determine with overall condition of a given car.
as others have mentioned, bring a mechanic or at least someone who knows about frame damage and do a compression check on the said engine. even if all that works out, there could be still some quirks that need to be worked out, or you just don't like the car for whatever reason (smelly cabin, etc).
I'd be very reluctant about trading in with a guy who's driving out so far for a trade. there would be more pressure for the transaction. it would prob end up awkward for the both of you if the deal doesn't fall through for whatever reason. If i were you, I would wait till you find something you like relatively close by and bargain at your own convenience.
you may want to take care of your civic's existing problems just so it will be easier to sell/trade when the time come to do so, and you have something reliable to drive for the time being.

114k isn't that low for mileage. My friend has one with 90k or something.
How far does he live to where you can't see it in person and test drive it?
I wouldn't trade him. I say keep your civic and save up for a 240 on your own.
He's some kid full of fail and bs. What does not having a cd player have to do with driving a car?
Go with your gut and find another car.

Never, never, never, buy a car you can't see in person first IMHO.

04-04-2007, 11:16 AM
You haven't ever redlined your car or even hit the VTEC crossover? What's the point of having it then?
And that trade sounds really fishy, because
A. 120k miles isn't particularly low
B. A few hundred mile drive wont significantly add to those miles at all
FaLKoN240
04-04-2007, 11:22 AM
Or you could just test drive it, before you go through with the trade.

Damn dont get dicked...I had an experience with a guy who sold me an fc and told me it was rebuilt and etc...i test drove the car and it was fine..a buddy of mine went along and said it was good..next thing i know 2 months down the line BOOM! blown motor. so i call the guy and ask him if the motor was rebuilt and he just answered me with "the previous owner had it done"...didnt mention that b4! so my advice would be the same as most of the guys here and get a mechanic and check it out. but A240 for a civic is always a good trade IMO. I hated my hatchback civic..all i could think about was man i cant wait to sell tyhis crap and buy me another 240.lol...good luck man.

he's 19
He wants to put the car on a trailer
doesnt have a CDplayer
doesnt wanna put miles on it
Lets recap - He's 19, i know how I drove my car when I was 19 and I am pretty sure a lot of people can relate. 240's are not known for being 'the best treated cars out there omg <3 <3'

Really, these cars arent that reliable? I always put nissan over honda IMO. Since these were actually built in japan, and my civic was built in canada. The ONLY thing im worried about is the engine, Im scared about coolant leaks, oil leaks and blowing something.
I know If I were to trade, I woiuld drive it very slowly home, and change the oil, do compression and pretty much flush every fuild in the car. However Im just hoping it will last me 300 miles.
akademikONE, this is actually a different 240sx.

Like everyone has said.. definitely test drive it first (if you can) , the body looks in decent condition, I'd say get some pictures of all that you can. Like you said your car does have high miles, but civics are very reliable cars. Again agreeing with what someone has already said, see if you can get it checked out by a mechanic, then go from there! Good-luck!
EDIT** posted at the same time as ^^
salvage title..hmm.. save up and attempt to find another I guess... once again Good-luck on your 240 search!

Oh, they are reliable, but to a certain extent - you can't expect beat the hell out of it and have it to come back without a little bitching at you. Keep in mind its like... a 14 year old car, it's going to have qwirks
However Im just hoping it will last me 300 miles.
<--226,000 miles; 300 extra miles probably wont kill it (strong emphasis on probably).

Hold out for something more local to you that you can go visually look at, drive, and/or have a mechanic look at.
(LoL, I think I take for granted I live in Cali and you can find 240's by the dozen.)

Better choice. What has he changed. Because the clutch can't still be good if it's the original one.
Does the motor have a rebuild on it yet?

i'll sell you my sr 240 and if you pay for a delivery price, i'll drive the car up to you and all even without a cd player. im just kidding, im not selling my 240, but if that guy doesn't want to drive it to you because he has no cd player, something is definately up with the car. it took me a couple of years to find a clean 240 in my area, and it was well worth the wait.

i bought my first 240 about 4 yrs ago when i first got my license. s13.. put 30 some odd thousand miles on it.. prior to my ownership, the 2 previous owners kept all records. the only parts ever replaced on that s13 were wipers, oil filters, oil, tires, spark plugs, etc.. all the basic wear and tear crap. i started doing work to it.. i replaced the starter, like the dumbass i was.. not realizing that the pos. wire running to the starter was corroded all the way to the starter.. so i put the old starter back in. even at 152,xxx miles when i sold that s13 with all the work i did to it, it not once had a problem. my sr'd s14.. 1.5 yrs with my baby now, once again.. previous owner told me he never drifted the car yadda yadda yadda, lied to me big time.. he clocked the odometer, was at the drift events every weekend.. however.. nothing major was ever replaced on the car, and to this day with all the abuse dished out by the previous douche bag (im seriously considering destroying his face with a brake caliper or a down pipe...) and me driving it hard, never had any issues... and yes, i did buy my car swapped. i didnt have too much experience at the time, nor the money to pay for a swap from the ground up. all the bandwagon boys around here in hamilton once again.. never have any problems with their 240s.. just stupid shit cuz they are inexperienced, and dont know how to do a throttle body service, nor change out their own air filters... 240s? unreliable? those two words dont fit into the same sentance, atleast from my experience with the honda crowd turn nissan lovers around here. btw.. does it piss off any of the old timer 240 guys on here seeing everybody and their mom jumping into this "drifting craze"? theres about 10 s13s and 4 s14s in a 5 sq. mile area around me, and its seriously pissing me off. :fawk2: :fawk2: :fawk2: *sigh*

yea, the whole drifting the IMO is stupid. I love working on cars, making them better, why not get a nice little sports car that fits my expectations like a nissan 240sx thats within budget? My 4dr civic is more for transporting children around, not building a machine that can produce x2 the torque it came with from the factory.
The search for a clean 240sx is still no luck, even in a 200 mile radius, NOTHING but rusted, beated up riced out 240s for sale. Im so depressed, because why spend more money on a car that you dont want, when you can spend money on your dream car (s14)
oh and I dont think im gonna trade for that dudes car, I coiuldnt imagine the problems with the car if the frame was bent, im sure it would eat up tires left and right.
But what if it is a good deal, and the kid just see's my car as alot better than his 240sx? (the white 240sx, the newer red one just got sold)
what year is your civic? but really if your gunna upgrade your 240, its not the most reliable car, its a bad ass car, but if your gunna push the 240 like i do, just remember its bound to break down, and be ready for it

fyi- 240's arn't the only good budget rwd options, and there's no reason why you should limit your options to such a selective range. check out fc turbo-2's, miatas, early mr-2's, e30's, 944's (if you're good at working on cars). gc8's are cool if you'd like to play with awd. you may even be able to find a good deal on a fd or a z32. s14's are nice, but not the end be all of affordable rwd cars. there are so many options out there!

yea.. my first experience with 240s was in august 1995. by boys cousin just bought an s14, the emerald green with all the options.. that car was so amazing.. and until my friend got it 2 yrs ago, it still only had 38,000 miles. all the options.. he got it for 6 off his cousin. i was pissed. =(. that car is the original 240 i fell in love with, and would trade my SR'd s14 for his now s14.5 any day.. at any rate, i always wanted an s14. when i 1st started driving, i settled for a gold s13 coupe. looovvveedd it..but it wasnt quite right... then i stumbled on this s14.. took me 2 yrs with my s13 before i found the right car. well worth the wait.. honestly? if you have to, look at cars that are 500..700.. 1000 miles away.. whatever it takes. if you wouldnt mind a flight to NJ, ill help you find a nice car haha. but not seriously.. i know what a achieving a dream is worth.

it does seem shady that the guy doesnt want to drive up his 240...but there are plenty of logical reasons:
he would have no ride back
he has no CD (NO crusing tunes!)
and perhaps no cruise control ( i drove my 91 from iowa to NY and that was tough without cruise, i had to learn to drive with my left foot!!)
and you have to look at the big picture. how much is your civic actually worth to you? you must relate that value to this 240sx you might be purchasing.....you also should agree to test drive it or have a mechanic look at it before you purchase it...this will help the guy be more honest with you on the subject of what the 240 needs (if its in need of any repairs)
if 240s are rare in your area...like they are in mine (central NY) then id say go for it but be careful....
also keep in mind...you can always just keep your reliable daily driver civic and save up for another 240sx :) :) :)
good luck :) let us kno how it goes down :) :)
