Alright, now I know that i'm newbie scum but Any ideas on how to get by the federalies and my insurance carrier on getting Turbo power in my one-via, Legally and fully legit. I was thinking a Ca18T out of a old 200sx but I don't think you can put an older engine in as a swap. and I don't have time or patience much less money for a VG30TT If any body knows the details on Legallity for US vehicles with turbo. or any swaps that could be pulled I would appreciate it

I live in auto hell, Pennsylvania.
Any ideas would be very helpful

well there are no laws against it other than passing emissions tests.. and i think they only do that out west.. so as long aas u pass inspection ur straght. also u could just turbo ur ka is u wanted to keep things legit with insurance. i know withmy insurance usaa.. thye said they will sti fully cover my car ans insure iteven with my sr.. but if any damage is doen to the engine they will not cover it. b/c it has a diff vin than the car. well hope this helped.. personally just don;t let ur insurance know bout it.. later man

Turbo kits are legal in most states. Where do you live?

What he said. The most important factor is what is legal. The places turbo kits are likely to be illegal are those with emissions testing. A KAT will not pass the visual and may fail the sniffer, afaik. An anonomous call to your local DMV isn't a bad thing. If you don't have those where you live, welcome to boost.

The SR and CA are illegal anywhere in the US (b/c never registered w/ DOT) - but may not be illegal in your state (federal law aside). Again - it must pass emission if you have those.

Insurance is a bit trickier. If you don't report the addition of a turbo, they *may* drop you - as you have made a material alteration to the car w/o reporting it. (I've never heard of this in practice, but I'd guess in most cases, it wouldn't be worth the legal fees to fight. If, however, you wound up in a hellacious accident w/ multiple injured persons - you may be poor for the rest of your life ). I'd call anonomously and test to see how much it would bump you b/f I reported it and then measure your risk.

its really the fuel setup and ignition timing that will determine if you pass emissions

plus if the downpipe and exhaust still have the cat and egr valve

Thanks for the legal input everybody. I think it's mostly a matter of the insurance carrier.

Hey Hippo, You can pull CA's out of old 200sx hatches the early 80's RWD. The local junkyard has got one that just needs a new turbo. The owner said I could get it for a 150 bucks. Now all I have to figure is wiring.

I'm pretty sure this is the way I am going to go

Couldn't you take the entire EFI stuff off of the the ca18et and and slap it on a ca20 and run the engine with the same wiring that you would've used to run the CA18's with? I'm going with the assumption that the ca18 turbo engines in the states have EFI because I know you can take a CA20 bottom end, replace the pistons with the ones from a ca18det and slap on the ca18det head, use the crankshaft pulley off of the ca18det, adjust all the cam gears and whatnot with the specs for a ca18det, and even run with the computer from a silvia with a ca18det(well you have to do alittle programming). That was the big thing in Japan and in a way still is because there kind of a rivalry between ca drivers and sr drivers. I figured if you can do it between single cam and twin cam engines, why not between two single cam engines that are both available in the States in the junkyards.
