Hey guys..

I've been doing some research on these and couldn't find too much information from experience (more drift wise)
Has anyone have real world experience with these set-up listed??

I'm looking to drift and I wanted to know if anyone with experience knows how capable these coilovers are...

R-tune 8k/7k
4-way front adjustable
8-way in the back

Cusco zero-2r or zero-2e
8k/6k
5-way adjustable (each click makes a lot of difference)

HKS hipermax D
8k/6k
30-way adjustable
dampening force-
(kgf) piston speed .1m/sec
F rebound-198 bump-73
R rebound-121 bump-22

They all are nice. Only one I haven't had any feedback on is the R-Tune ones.

They all do what you need. There isn't really a drift coilover. It just keeps bodyroll to a minimum and allows you to have better feedback/control.

I have some hypermax D's I'm waiting to toss on my car. Once I get off my ass...

If you've never drifted before, then there likely isn't anything different among those 3 choices that will make you better or worse.

I would go with something with fewer adjustment settings. Something about "30-way" seems pointless.

Tanabe Sevens are sweet

If you're just trying to drift though, get STANCE coilovers...cheaper, awesome quality, stateside support. What more could you want?

cheaper price, but Stance coils will keep you satisfied for a long time

My Cusco zero2 are fine. But I don't drift. Maybe a future track day at Laguna or something. I started out with 10/8kg Cusco springs then upgraded to 6/4kg Swift Springs. Yes, each click makes a big difference. Front is 2, rear on 1. I tired rear on 2 but it makes the car too twitchy over bumps especially on crappy Cali roads. Btw, I look at quality over price because of our crappy roads.

nismo r-tunes are better than what you hear.

the ride is pretty goddamn smooth on jersey roads. not bouncy or harsh at all. one of the locals tracks and daily drives on them. look into them if you can find a good price.

Sold a set of Nismo r-tuned for the s14 a while back to a cali customer. Guy was pleased as hell! he kept calling/email me back from then forth.

wonder how he is doing now... his name is Andy... thats all I can remember.

I currently run the Cusco 2R and their fine for me when drifting. I have them set at 1 in the front and 2 in the rear. very nice coilovers.

Thanks for the help guys.
I'm not in the stateside so stance and kts is out of question.
Also, this is not my first time drifting and I'm looking to compete and win ;)
Since Yen vs. Won(korean money) rate is where I like.. I can get these coils for around 1000-1200. (I also have hook-ups for shipping) So I guess it seems like I can't go wrong with any of them.. More input would be nice, thanks!

+1 for Tanabe Sustec Pro "Sevens", especially for drifting where the higher spring rate will be appreciated. I love em for the "spirited driving" I do around town too, great ride, great adjustability (seven clicks total I believe). Got em set in the middle on the front and one click stiffer on the back.

only thing I have against tanabe is the fact they wont rebuild their coils... they want you to buy another set...what a rip.

go all out! get some DG5!!!

My stances keep me happy. Ive been waiting to hear some feedback on the new Stance 3-ways. Those should be real good and still a good bargain for hardcore track dampers.

Hahaha...
I was looking at some DG5s but they come close to 1700 here.
For some reason, I can't find tanabe sevens in Japan or here.. I only see tanabe fives. I also might go for the cusco zero-2e with the e-con...(yes I'm that lazy:squintd: )

I drift on nismo's R-tuned, they are awesome for lack of a better word, they were worth every penny and also so nice on the street. I've my friends cars with different coilovers and all my friends agree that my coilover are really nice. Plus when you buy them new you get a booklet with all the part numbers for everything that you can order at your local dealer. :2f2f:

Dmax for hood and fenders... everything else is "meh"...

havent found a price but how about yashio coils? (nm 2200 yen mark)

I think tien super drift are in your budget...

other than that the cusco's your looking into are a pretty good choice.

Fk coils look intresting

Stiffer?? no need for stiffer, my car has little to no body roll. I drift and road race with them and on top of that daily drive them, no problems what so ever. Like I said before worth every penny :rawk:

Not really a fan of tein products..
I would rather go with HKS hipermax-d than tein super drifts ;)
Racing gear products are also in my budget but they have a spring rate of 10/8 which I would hate on the streets of Korea.
To name some more... silkroads, hipermax-III, tanabe pro-seven,five, viral sports, buddy club, jic flt-tar, and gp g-masters to mind.

Well if you're looking to actually compete, id prob look into setup that's rebound and compression adjustable, and revalved for higher spring rates. that way, you can gradually fine tune your setup more accurately, according to your preferences.

unfortunately, the such coilovers dont come cheap. I think the cheapest one out there, if its released, is that $1900 stance coilover. custom rates can be ordered too which is great. but being overeseas would make that difficult. the next would prob be the $2300 tein RE's w/ 10k/8k rates and an external resovoir. I know you said you dont like tein, and neither do i, but that is a tempting price for what if offers. after that, setups like the 3-way adjustable koni 28's would prob run you $3500 and may need to be rebuilt more often than street coilovers. most likely valved for a very wide and high range of spring rates. I think someone on this site who tracks their car competitively runs the 28's in their s13 iirc.

then again, if you're just doing occasional track driving and dd'ing your car, Id suggest getting a good set of street coilovers like the tanabe sevens with the 10f/8r rates, maybe get an additional set of 8f/6k rear swift springs, and call it a day. thats what i'm prob going to end up throwing on my s14 as well.

for reference, i don't compete. i like taking my car to the track 3-6 times a year for time trial and driving school events. I also dd my s14 in los angeles, so rates like 10/8 even with soft rebound/compression settings wouldn't be optimal imo.
i have 375f/500r (similar to 8/10) rates on my beater crx on ots konis set at full soft. it rotates excellent, but the rates are too high b/c the car hops all the time when the road surface gets a little uneven.

Well guys.
I did win the bidding and the final price of the r-tunes came out to be around 1000 but the seller won't respond.. LOL.
So I'm looking at new coilovers..
I'm even considering going all out for a set of DG5 coils since I will be competing.
It would suck daily driving with 10/8 spring rates though.
Maybe I will run 9/7 like kazama with his s15.

there are couple new options I have though.
KTS and Stance are added to the list since my friend can hook me up with free-shipping from the states.

Any input as far as drifting goes with those two??

I used to DD 10/8 Spring rates on Tien Super Drift Coilovers. It wasn't as bad as you would think - you'll get used to it. Sometimes you have to sacrifice comfort for performance.

I'd go with Stance Coilovers. They are awesome coilovers for track and DD. I'd also go with the Tanabe Sevens.

No matter what you pick though you will feel every single bump, crack, etc. on the street. It'll need some getting used to.

have you looked into the gp sports gr 6? i run them in my red hatch and love them. i just ordered some stance gr+pro for my track car so in a few weeks hopefully ill be able to test them out and compare them to the gr6

I can get ahold of tanabe pro fives but not the sevens for some reason.
I don't mind having a pretty stiff suspension on the street as I get used to those things pretty fast.

I might go with hks hipermax-d but I'm still waiting to hear about stance and kts for drifting.

personally what i'd like to see a review most of all, is for the new Stance GR3's. Seems like a killer deal for the features it has. unfortunately, I've found almost nothing on it so far.

I'm aware of those stance threads as I did lots of research before posting this thread. Couldn't find too much about people seriously using it for drifting.

What is your opinion on using hipermax d's for competition levels?

Just to name a couple people...

There are plenty of people using KTS for drifting: Kookz (BJones!), Russell (McRussellpants)

people using/used Stance for drifting: Lindsay, Aaron (Dousan), all the Touge Factory guys

other brands used/currently using
Zeal: BH

JIC: Logan (ASpecLogan), Lindsay, myself

Tanabe DD: Matt(LookoutMatt), Aaron (Dousan)

and as for shipping...

tanabe dd is discontinued, new version is SEVEN.
FYI--from our experience the most important part for a coilover is the ability to be rebuild and also at a reasonable cost.
on a street car, most coilover won't last over 2 years(depend on driving style and also road condition of where you live).
our last advice is that you get what you paid for, so don't expect $1,000 coilver to be as good as $2,000 ones.
the key is to find what you "need" 90%+ of people will never need D1 or Racing level coilovers.
good luck,

sam
ps..NEVER buy used coilovers.

Rookie84

jspecusa
04-09-2007, 12:37 AM
Tanabe makes good coilovers, but you should contact them about warranty and service info.
My personal favorites are Quantum,Aragosta, Ohlin, and Kg/mm, but it's mostly jdm market so $$$$$.
Most coilovers are not comfortable especially the "good" stuff.
For my daily s14 I use Megan, because they offer 1 year warranty, they are local, and they sell replacement shocks after the warranty expires.
What comes down to it is to go to many track events/car meet and try out different cars with different setup.
What's good to other might not be good to you or good enough for you.
Good luck,

Sam

Rookie84
04-09-2007, 12:43 AM
It is actually easier for me to get JDM stuffs since I am in Korea.
It sucks that I can't go out to track events/car meets because the scene is very limited in Korea. Thanks for the help though and whatever I decide, I'll make sure I'll post a good review on it.

jspecusa
04-09-2007, 01:02 AM
Since you live in Korea, I suggest you look for the companies that make coilover for Japan companies in Korea(sorry I can't tell you the brands).
They can sell it to you cheap(no brand name) and service them locally.
If you must have the Jdm stuff, try Kg/mm or GP Sports DG5.
Just to let you know majority of coilovers in Japan are not made in Japan, also they are design for road in Japan.
Good luck,

Sam
