How many people are running no bumper supports when going FMIC ? How would you run one with a FMIC. I'm thinking just cut the middle part out to clear the intercooler and leave the corner or cutting the insides of the bumper support. In the magazines the tell you to take the support off but I don't think that's really safe in case of an accident. What do you guys think ?

I think you read too many magazines rather than taking some time out of your day and figuring out things on your own. Go out there, take your bumper off and mount your FMIC kit and see what is possible. An angle grinder and common sense are your best friends when it comes to this.

Hm, I was planning on taking mine out when my FMIC gets here, but now I can't decide after seeing this happen to my friend last night.

I was able to trim my bumper reinforcement to fit over my Greddy VSPL kit.

maybe that will help you some. Also some of the kits lean forward more like my Greddy kit. You can do what I did and redrill the top bracket and rotate the the fmic in some to gain more clearence.

why does that scare you? hes not dead. if you hit a pole dead on your car is getting fucked up if you have a bumper or not

also there is like zero saftey to having a bumper support if you cut it anyway

Just take the damn thing off. You're block airflow if you just trim it. Plus, when you trim it, you take most of the strength away. I think they are only rated for 5mph anyways..

I don't have one.
No front.
No rear.

The bumper support is simply a 5mph American requirement insurance bumper right? not the structural kind for your life? I cant remememember.

the missing chunk takes a load of structural integrity out of the support. its like playing football with the face guard in your helmet missing. either way, something is gonna get messed up in a head-on anyways.

It's just to stop your frame from crumpling in a fender bender... cut it and put steel rods across instead... you don't want your car "totalled" because it hits something small

thats what happened to my car with no bumper support...u can see on either side where the ends are. I hit a telephone pole when i lost control i hit it head on and my intercooler and radiator obv didnt do shit to soften the impact ...skidded out on the road and that shit happens so fast that theres really very little you can do...i can honestly say i believe the damage would have been a lot less if i had a bumper support. next 240 im keepin mine

maybe instead of worrying about having a bumper support or not, you should not hit telephone poles

I was waiting for him to post those... damn I get a tingle in my spine when I see that.
eastcoast: I don't know what your current financial situation is but there's a few S14's on ebay that don't look too bad JIC your looking

i trimmed it a bit(black) and rewelded it(red)
hell it's probably stronger now than it was before. Before it was folded over and spot welded in maybe 5 spots? Now there is a bead all the way across.
I had no problem fitting a 3 inch thick core with plenty of clearance

if your worried about keeping your bumper support and it being functional you should dtry building a custom fmic setup. Search around, there are many guys on here that have built custom fmic setups that didn't require removing the bumper support.

took mine out simply because if i rear-end someone their bumper will be about hood level on my car because it is lowered (even more so in the front if i am hard on the brakes) and i have aero. I left the rear in so that when some dumb ass rear-ends me my car wont be insta totaled because the first metal to be touched would be the body. fiberglass doesn't slow cars too fast

yeah i say rebuild it.. anything to slow down the impact is good.. and 98 koukile.. seems resonable.. to keep it on. this seems like a small piece you will regret not to have after an accident.. latah

i cut the center out of mine. if you hit anything i fugure your gonna fuck shit up anyways right? it was the easiest and most effecient way to mount mine. the sawzall is the greatest tool ever.

i hacked my support, even tho a bit of it is missing, some support > no support, that's my opinion...

if you hit a pole like the white s14 above, it doesn't matter if you have/don't have support, it's going to be totalled, but for a minor minor accident, it'll help reduce/crumple...

but at the end of the day, any accident = salvage according to insurance companies for us po' folks, haha

Bumper support will save your frame rails...but it's not like they do much anyways...

If you hit hard enough to worry about it, your car is fucked either way...just less fucked with the bumper support
