I've driven all over the place...and i can tell you this: Break your odometer first
Ummm, if you are going for time, beef jerky and coke. I stopped 3 times between florida and michigan....made it in 18 hours with alotta construction.
If you are going for leisure, bring all the food and drink you want because who cares about time.
Lots of music...you'll be sick of most of your cd's by 800 miles into the trip.
A book (if you like that sort of crap...)
An atlas helps.
Paper and pen (maybe crayons...) Playing 20 questions and hangman kills time well.
Cell phone, car charger, roadside hazard kit /w lights, cables, hose patch etc..
Make sure your car is in good repair before leaving. Belts and fluids..definately washer fluid.
I think thats about all u should need. Staying non-bored is the hardest part.

Hmmm, for a trip that long...
Books on tape or Books on CD really really help. Get something good like a Tom Clancy novel.
Bring some basic tools... like some plyers/screw drivers/maybe a small socket set and an adjustable wrench. All the other emergancy gear that Jeff pointed out. If something does go wrong, it'll probably be a belt/hose/or tire related problem.
Can of fix a flat (but don't forget your spare/jack)
AAA road trip "trip ticks"/AAA membership would be a good idea. I recommend AAA Plus.

If you had one of those handheld DVD players or an in car DVD player it would really help, then you could get a bunch of DVDs, but we are all not rich. Umm bring a pillow when you switch positions, and some toilet paper, you never know \
Since its summer bring lots of water.
