Im trying to figure out what my next mod should be. Im gonna do what matters more, weather it be coils or a diff.

My car is on stock suspension now, so Im leaning towards coils because my car looks like a donk. But everyone says get a diff before anything else because it makes the most difference.

what do you guys think?

you left this very open, like what do you already have? as far a being able to tell you what is the most beneficial more info is needed.

A differential won't do shit if you can't control the car. OE suspension, especially 15 year old OE suspension, is about as solid a wet noodle.

Silly, but.
K&N Filter (believe me, best bang for buck, helped my problems out at least)

Tires if you don't already have a good pair. Suspension is a good start.
Maybe brakes or at least new pads. Endless I heard are pretty good.
Kill switch or some kind of security is a good one as well.

Upgrade clutch, flywhee, pressure disc. Hell, maybe even a better battery.

There's a lot really. =x
Just my two cents at least.

Coilovers are most important. Then you get sway and strutbars with some control arms. If you have any money left over, get your diff welded.

Mdl_Pin0y

what's this car going to be used for?? zbrakes might be overkill if you're car isn't for the track and it seems you are on a budget since you didn't buy a bunch of mods right off and you made this thread....

I'd do:
suspension (bushings especially)
brakes (if they need work, if not wait until they do and then upgrade)
drivetrain (clutch/flywheel)
engine mods

basically I'd go over the car and anything that's wrong with it replace and upgrade whenever something breaks or requires maintenance...should save you some $$$ since you cant really sell the stock brakes or most other stock part for a whole lot.

coils...diff...seat...and save all the extra cash and buy tires and enter a ton of events....learn to drive and have a fuck load of fun....enough said

1. I say get it running right. So you don't have to be on the side of the road.
2. I would say suspension and brakes since your in that region any way.
3. Diff
4. Wheels and a decent set of tires unless you know your going past 150mph.
5. Enjoy what you have for a while and expect many more mods to come like motor swaps, different colors, and a whole hell of alot of stares from all kinds of people.

03-11-2007, 09:10 PM
honestly, i'd get the diff before the suspension. peg legging sucks.

i had more fun with my car after the diff before i got my suspension. the suspension just added more to the fun.

either way you wont go wrong, but i stand behind the route i took.

doin burnouts just aint that fun...with coils you can atleast do some grip drivin...much more fun then just doin burnouts...buy the best coilover system that you can afford...then get a VLSD...r get a bucket so you dont slide out of your seat...and have fun...diff before coils...that is absolutely retarded...well i guess that is what i would expect out of people on the internet...

If you drift and want to have more fun, get a diff, otherwise, get coils.

Thanks for the neutral rep.

Honestly, DIFF is critical. Driving without a diff is like having 1 fucking leg. If you dont plan to drift, or lower your car a lot then get it's not as important sure. But when it comes to bang for buck, LSD makes the most difference.

If you plan to do anykind of roadracing/drifting, then get a damn welded diff for $50 bucks. Then when you learn more you can drop $1000+ on coilovers. Think about how much money you are dumping into suspension if you dont even track your fucking car.

You obviously have open diff...

TheSquidd

You obviously have open diff...

You obviously are dumb. You can drift open diff, and be fine, in fact the challenge of it will probably help you as a driver. Suspension will truely make the greatest difference. Thanks in advance for that neg rep, sizzle chest.

1. coils
2. track time
3. tires
4. track time
5. welded
6. track time
7. seat
8. track time
9. more tires
10. track time.

10 steps to success.

You can weld your diff at any time for like 20$ at some crappy auto shop. It's not nearly on the level of planning and saving of money that coilovers are.

95Kouki
03-11-2007, 10:47 PM

Exactly, that's why you might as well do that first, and have fun with it while saving up for coilovers.

03-11-2007, 11:30 PM
Well its a preference thing. I never said you CANT drift without LSD. I mean you can drift fine on stock suspension or even springs too. But once you have been to the track a few times the open diff is a big hinderance on your progression as a driver.

I'll agree that suspension can make a bigger difference, but I still think the cost-effectiveness of lsd is greater than coilovers.

I'd say the big 3 is diff, coilovers, seat. In whatever order you feel necessary.

03-11-2007, 11:47 PM
I say get coilovers and slap on some J30 brakes. Oh, and bushings. Sway bars too.

down_shift
03-12-2007, 12:54 AM
I dont know what I told you before but I think you should grab some coilovers next. ES bushing kit at the same time would make sense. Then grab a diff. plus lots of seat time.

sr20det4mys13
03-12-2007, 02:37 PM
yeah i say coil, or just springs, and then from there work on the rest, i mean if your going on track go for coils.. but just daily driver go springs, wont waste your tires as much (assuming you slam the car when you get coils) and it will do the job.. latah

420sx
03-12-2007, 04:46 PM
what are you going for with the car? any track?

do you drift? or do you cry at the sight of perfectly fine tires being destroyed? do you like the smell of burning tires?

then you should do:
1) coils
2) diff
3) wheels and tires
4) seat, knob, st. wheel.
5) sway's and chassis stiff.
6) other shit

oh yea... coils diff (at least welded) and a seat should be on priority if u gonna track the car alot.

all this IMHO. you dont have to give a fuck what i think but you asked.

I personally bounced around a bit. I got a set of Z32 brakes and a new matching master cyl, then Eibach springs and AGX adjustables. I then got a factory Canadian S14 R200 and i love the set up. I topped it off with some wider 9in x 17in wheels and it handles like a dream. Along with a few random urethane bushings it's just stiff enough for me and still plenty streetable.
-- and im selling a set of Q45 calipers (2 pot) and a factory J30 R20 (5 bolt) if you're interested.

all this IMHO. you dont have to give a fuck what i think but you asked.

werd. seriously.

oh and thanks to whoever gave me neutral rep, w00t.

so basically what everyone is saying (without a doubt), is get either coils, a diff, or a seat.

i guess you cant go wrong either way. you are prolly gonna end up with all the parts anyway further down the line.

i still had more fun with the diff as a first mod. done and done. i wouldnt have done it any other way.

Ok so the car is going to be used for daily/drift

I was going to buy a clutch first, along with tune up supplies. I have 2 mint sparco sprints I got from my friend for 150. They will be going in the car as soon as my other friend has time to weld me up some brackets. I just got it painted for 800 bucks, The paint was trashed so I had to do something.

I have 8 extra tires and wheels. I have a hookup on free tires and a place where I can get used ones cheap. I will be entering the next local event (next month) and hopefully autoxing this coming weekend.

I will probably get coilovers first. Im wondering if i really need stance, or if i could make do with some cheaper ones (megan, ksport, D2) ehhh i dunno.

Yeah, you definetley need suspension. That is the first upgrade you do assuming your car is in good mechanical condition. If not, you should make those your priorities to fix. If your planning to keep the KA, get a performance clutch with chromoly flywheel if it is slipping on you. You can get a combo off ebay for like $400. If your car is mechanically good and clutch isn't slipping....than do not hesitate to get the coilovers.

For $700, you can get Brand new Tanabe coilovers. They are advertised for s13 but they should make for s14 too....take a look

mmmm maroon s14 ;) ftw.

but yea, u got seats. get some kts or stance. get a 2 way diff. or if u want to be cheap get welded. which i personally dont like and i had in 2-3 cars. 2 way is ownage. but to welded owners its dead beat music

how much you got to spend on some coilovers??

here on zilvia you could catch killer deals and maybe get more if you just be patient and do a little reasearch on different setups.

03-13-2007, 03:30 PM
Its possible drift with an open but its no where near as fun with a locking diff. I rocked a welded for a while it was cool, I didnt have any problems with it. then when you get a decent suspension set up. it all ties to gether.
