I live in Ohio and I heard some talk that if you do a swap in your car the engine has to come from a car of an equivalent year or newer. Anyone know if this is true? Also would an SR20DET pass an emissions test if the stock DP and exhaust were still on the car? Would there be any other legal issues? And finally do insurance companies insure swaps? Its a pretty big investment and I don't plan on having a wreck but everyone says that... not to mention the others on the road...
Please use the search function.
As far a i know an sr swap is illegal but it dosen't stop most people <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

After searching and looking at the testing procedures for my state I have discovered:
1. That according to a couple of posts the SR20DET can pass emissions.
2. Ohio doesn't have the visual check that is the main reason that SR20's are illegal <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> .
If #1 is false please tell me now. Thank you.

True, for the whole USA

Maybe, depends on the state. CA prolly not, OH, maybe *shrugs* haven't tried so I wouldn't know really.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Would there be any other legal issues?</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>
Yes. It is illegal to use an engine that wasn't produced in a car in the USA. The SR20det was never in production in the USA so it will never be legal.

Not sure, some companies might...others might not. I would see problems with insuring an illegal engine though, so I can't see anybody insuring an SR.
If they don't do a visual inspection then you have a pretty good chance of getting away with it. Even if you fail the sniffer, you don't lose the car or anything...just make some changes to pass emissions and you'll be fine.

The great thing about Oregon (except Portland, maybe Salem and Eugene): NO EMISSIONS TEST REQUIRED!
Visual test? Would the guy even know it wasn't the original engine? I'm sure a cop wouldn't if you did get pulled over, and how many times has a cop ever asked you to pop the hood so he can make sure your engine was in production for the US anyway?

Werd <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> But do they check the VIN number on the engine or anything like that? If they did you'd be SOL.

I live a little bit north of Cincinnati. We have emissions testing in Butler (where I live) and Hamilton counties I guess since we live near Cincinnati... If you want to call about a half hour drive close...

re: motor/car year rule. Where did you see this? I've seen it for CA, but VA said this wasn't an issue. Is it a federal rule?
Just curious.

It is a federal thing. You can legaly put a different engine in a car as long as it is from a newer model and if it was offered for that car (in the US)

Do you know where you found this? I've looked before, but have never seen it. The rule I heard is that the car must maintain all emissions equipment it came with. That means that (in the case of a 240) a 97 motor in a 98 chassis is okay, but a 95 motor (OBD I) is illegal in a 98 chassis.
At any rate, I've looked at this stuff quite a few times, but have never seen the anti-backdate rule (except by state).
Just curious (not even planning a swap)

I can safely say Eugene has no emissions tests. And since Salem's even smaller I'd guess they don't either. And I'm kind of curious, do you have to get your car inspected every few years? Or just after you purchase a car?

I'm planning to move to portland (want to go to Reed college). If I live in portland at reed, can I just get it inspected in some sorrounding town legally, or do I have to do it in portland?

If you have family in a county that doesnt require emissions test, you can register the car there to avoid them.
