View Full Version : Vlsd Swap... Driveshaft not fitting? WTF?

Wont any s14 or j30(with axles of course) just bolt into any s14? I have a couple vlsd's and someone(who seems to know their shit) said you have to have a vlsd driveshaft to work with it. I was always under the impression that only Auto/Manual driveshafts were different but that it had nothing to do with the diffs...just the trannys...
Sounds like BS to me... Am i correct in saying that you can swap any s14 or j30 diff into a s14 WITHOUT having driveshaft problems?
thanks.

no you are incorrect to my knowledge.
IIRC the difference in the open-vs-limited slip differentials means you have different length driveshafts in each setup. Since the'ye two piece shafts, it's one piece or the other that changes in length. This principal applies to S13s and S14s, but again IIRC. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe you have ABS?

ABS would solve the problem, not create it.
99% of R200V units also are equipped with an ABS wheel skid sensor in the front snout. This adds about 3/4" to the overall length of the unit. This is common knowledge.
Now for fitment, 99% of the time it bolts right up perfect, there's enough freeplay in the diff bushings, subframe bushings, motor mounts, and transmission mount to accommodate the extra 3/4" without issue. The carrier bearing itself can easily compress that much if needed. However there is the one oddball car that even with playing with all the tolerances it's simply too tight and will grind on the tail section of the transmission. In that case you need an ABS driveshaft to properly fit.
I've installed or seen installed over 40 VLSDs in my day, only one was overly tight and we eleviated it by just loosening everything and working the shaft in. Sometimes it can even be tight depending on how the car is loaded by jacking it up, one side too high can create a bind whereas both sides at even height is fine.

Mine was too tight, did a 5sp swap on my abs car, used an open diff driveshaft and it was too long. So I had a custom 1pc made.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to clear that up r240na. Much appriciated.
Please explain this.
So 99percent of all r200's are equipped for the abs, making them 3/4 longer.
1. if its NOT an abs car is it guaranteed NOT to be an abs capable diff, or did they sometimes throw an abs capable diff on a non abs car.

brainfood- lol. you're the one who told the guy it wouldn't fit. When he said you said it, I didn't want to argue cause i figured you'd know...but this makes sence now... Sound like you got the 1 in 40 bad luck...

ABS driveshafts solve it quick and easy. This should be common knowledge, with all the similar threads running around. Not to sound like a douche, but searching would have yielded the same results as stated.

Obviously this is not "common knowledge" as two VERY EXPERIENCED zilvia members said two different things. Neither of them wrong... I learned something from this thread...so thanks brainfood and r240na.
and my question still sits.

My non-abs shaft would not allow the ABS VLSD to fit.
Even after several minutes with a hammer.

Actually, if you've noticed, 240Birdman asked with a question mark, likely stating he is quite unsure himself. Something makes me lean towards him running a welded, but im not sure about that.

There are a few R200Vs that are not ABS equipped, but it's rare. I actually have a JDM Z32 R200V that's not ABS, although every single US model comes with 4channel ABS. So yes, 99.9% of the time if you buy a VLSD from a S14, J30, S13, etc. it will have the added length on the snout. But to fully answer your question, there is no such thing as an ABS equipped diff installed in an non ABS car. It's either ABS or not.

this is a good page to keep for further questions when doing a swap...and its loaded with info http://www.ka24development.com/vlsd.html

Heh yeah, I am almost 100% sure it wont work for him since the car that is in question is my old car that I bought a non-abs driveshaft for hoping it would fit because I couldnt find a used abs driveshaft to save my life. And it didnt fit so I ordered a 1pc from drivelines inc. for $300! But its a badass driveshaft and made a huge difference in power to the ground on the ka car. Probably not as noticable now that I have power.

damn...i guess you would DEFF. know best in this case..lol.
I've always wondered if the one piece shafts were worth it considering they free up so much moving weight... Tempted to get one...very tempted.
thanks.
