View Full Version : S14 SR worth it?

I'm ordering a sr tomorrow and I just found out the extra wiring needed for a s13 sr into a s14. So getting a s14 sr will make the wiring easier but is the s14 sr really worth the extra $500 besides the easier wiring?
I guess the main thing I'm asking is should I pour a little more money into getting a s14 sr or just stick with the s13 sr and save a little more money and not cut it so tight?

Let me tell you how an s14 sr puts down more torque than a regular redtop or a black top s13, plus it feels lighter of the line s14 sr20 was made for an s14, s13sr20 was made for s13 you do the math

I know the benefits, I was just asking if it was worth $500.
The things I know of from s13 to s14 sr are
S13 S14
205 - 220hp
T25 - T28
High port intake design - Low port intake design
No VTC - VTC

upgrading a s13 blacktop with a s14 t28 is about $400 already, not to mention $$$ needed for the extra wiring. VTC on the s14s make more low end torque than a s13.

I disagree. It depends on the goals of the car and the power goals for the motor.
Regarding the motor, if you're looking for good response the s14sr is a better choice. If you don't care about response so much go with the s13 sr and the money you save can go towards a bigger turbo. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Take if for what it's worth.

I have the choice.
I am getting S14 motor.
unless... a cheap S15 comes around.

VCT (or VTC) allows power to be shifted depending how you want it thanks to a tune...
the motor is newer....
andif it didnt work then why would they repeat the same thing into the s15's?
wiring all it equals is extra time if your willing to do it on your own. larger injectors are a 15 deal onlu along with the BB except on SOME late model 14's
spend more time searching on such a broad subject peace!

$3800 for a front clip is the lowest I have seen

simply put:
4g63 comes in different age over 10 year period,
I'm sure you know with each year there are new improvement not shown outside of the motor.
it's the same with all motor including sr20.
are the improvement and age of the motor worth the $500?
cheers,

In that case just go with an r34 gt-r rb26 and call it a day

I can do the wiring no probably. I already know pretty well how to do it. Just simplicity makes things nicer most of the time. Its not that I cant do it or dont know how.
I think though I am going with a s14 sr just because I'll probably end up upgrading to a t28 if I would get a s13 sr later down the road so I might as well get a s14 sr. I'll probably like it better in the long run and it will make the wiring a bit easier.

I agree with the consensus here. I have a '96 s14 notchtop in my '96 240sx. The subtle differences alone make the s14 notchtop swap more than worthwhile the $500 premium (which is an almost neglible factor considering how much more in extra parts you have to throw in). Basically my car had zero compatibility issues. I could even got to hook up a/c with ease.
If I could, i would have even gone with a s15 swap and thrown in a 5-spd tranny. the helical lsd alone (cost arounds $700 or so) would have made it worthwhile. Then again, the wiring and compatibility issues would have prob made it a considerably bigger headache.

Well worth it, if your not going to step up to a 6 cylinder. :D In fact, if I was going to build a SR car now, it would be a S14 or S15 SR for sure.

I've thought about a RB25, but I decided to go sr. I dont know much about the rb series other than the basics and I dont know much about the install but it wouldn't be that hard because its been asked a million times. I decided to go s mainly for availability of parts. Not saying you cant get parts for the rb but their is more parts locally for a sr than a rb so if something breaks I'll be more likely to have a part close by.
