Hey guys,
I sold my last car (turbo honda :jerkit:) and Im getting a new car. Ive swapped an sr before but it wasnt stock for long. Im in college and i cant settle with a stock accord or anything like that. Do you guys think a internally stock SR with stock boost is decently reliable? Thanks in advanced for your opinions!

Craig

in my experience an sr that is low milage and you do your homework on the place you get your engine from is extremely reliable. i have a friend that put a 80k on his daily driven sr.

The SR20DET is a stock motor used by THOUSANDS of S-chassis cars day in and day out. Why wouldn't it be reliable?

People put the damn motor on a pedestal thinking it's the greatest motor in the world.

Noobs.

Its absolutely reliability. Now if it were a Toyota Atlantic 4AGE in a AE86 that you were driving every day, Id wonder. Just keep the car maintained (as you should with ANY engine) and all is well. Also, make sure you do everything right the first time. Wiring will be a major headache if youre not careful.

I do not like rocker arm stoppers. Swapped cars are stupid if you're in college as well. Get the Accord and wait until you have money.

Well its between a gsx and a swapped 240 and we all know how reliable 4g63s are...

If you're talking about a 4G63 against a SR20DET in terms of reliability, then... you know the answer.

haha +1 I just have never dealt with a stock sr

sr20det is a factory tuned engine so its factory reliabel as long as it stays stock.

4G63s arent unreliable... DSMs are. The actual motor itself never has gave me any problems on my DSM. Its everything else from wiper motors to fuel pump relays, the unknown squeels, O2 sensors... ugh ugh ugh...

This is EXACTLY what I was going to post...

It came in a regular fucking car.... MANY regular cars at that.

Im sure all the people who drive SR powered cars in japan are worried their motor will blow up every week.

change your oil, keep it cool, and you will be fine.

Thats why you get a 6-bolt!

Does every person in Japan have their sr20det not come in their cars originally? If you had a full on good stock setup then I'd say the reliability would be damn near stock but not as good as it was in the car it originally came in of course...
You're in school. You need a not performance car in general.

Stock SR swap, big radiator, cooling fans, etc. and you'll be okay I guess.

Maintain it well and you'll be good.

And um. Watch out for bashing in the oil pan. Not fun.

The SR is not reliable. People usually beat their cars to hell and don't maintain them. Expect the worst so you're ready for it.

There are 2 types of SRs: those that need to be rebuilt and those that have already been rebuilt :)

Seriously though, expect to at least rebuild all the external accessories, turbo, gaskets, cooling, etc.

Well, do that with ANY car you get.

IMO i'd get a shortblock and get a rebuild...yeah. That's me. Me me me.

Drive a stock accord and don't ruin your fucking education, it sounds like you need every last bit you can find.

:stupid: Yeah the wiring will be a headache. My Sr Harness was cut in three places when I got it. And those fuckers said uncut wiring harness when they sold it to me. Cost me around $200 to get a new one.

Then why is he driving a 240? Why care about reliability? Buy 10 SRs and your own shop to swap them whenever they blow up.

So i know Im knew here on zilvia but who the f*ck do you think you are. So im a college student and I dont have a million dollars, but I want to drive a car I enjoy. I came here for some help and there are assholes like you. And by the way I drink 5 nights a week, still get a 3.8+, and will make more money than youve ever seen when I graduate. And to everyone else thanks for your help...

Ive swapped SR's before and I know its a headache, but I just moved to Colorado so I dont have the tools or facilities to swap. Thats why im going to buy one already done and save money and time...

You "cant settle with a stock accord"? Yeah buddy stay in school you need it.

I really dont get why its such a hard concept for people on a CAR forum to understand... Why drive a boring car when I can afford a fun car I can enjoy?

I think it's reliable as long you don't abuse it alot. soon or later you will have to rebuild it , if that happens.

If you want a car to "enjoy" you better be prepared to pay for it.
If you have to ASK about reliability, then you don't sound very prepared.

Why bother posting if you're already set on buying an SR? So you can get off calling people assholes? So you think you're better than someone else here because you think you're going to make money? Because you drink alot? There are a billion dumbass kids that come here with that same jerkoff response "oh, i'lll make money don't you tell me what to do!"

Newsflash, money doesn't mean you're smart, and whether I was rich or poor, it's the last reason i'd give someone to prove how bright I was.

Maybe you should drink 4 nights a week and use extra time to get some mother fuckin sense. Nobody needs a certain car, and if you're such a cool kid that can swap engines, "get a 3.8", drink beer, and talk shit about how much money they'll make, why the fuck are you here asking about reliability.

mine was not. do not buy through osaka motors. even if they say they have leakdown tested... because they send you a crap motor and will not give you the correct parts when they are missing. horrible.

The reason he posted is because he thinks he shouldnt buy it and is trying to rationalise his decision. Get a god damn 240 you stubborn shit and have all the nightmares that come with owning an old performance car. You need an econobox with as low miles and the newest date on the bitch as possible. I was all about helpin you until you acted like a cunt but now I want to see you get an sr then have it shit the bed on the way to your finals and have you fail classes. Thats why you buy an Accord, because shit like that does happen.

OptionZero
03-02-2007, 10:36 AM
If you were determined to go down the SR road, buying the Accord as well would be a smart investment. Stuck with an blown SR puts you "worse" off than a poor, uncool, kid with "only" a stock accord.

I was on your side until you posted that. There is no need to respond to rudeness with rudenes.

And I wouldn't compare grades and future income if I were you. There are several idiot savants here.

I drove my sr 240 to university, I had no problems with it other than blowing a IC pipe off once on my way home.

Now I have a b16 civic to drive to school.

41mpg and reliability > Sr240 hassles as far as school daily drivers goes.

dont do it, such a pita for a college student, and the hoes dont liek to hear, "sorry we cant go out cause I have a blown turbo..."

you've gotta seperate your wants and needs. You don't need a 240sx, are you prepared for the worst? When you own these types of cars, where you beat on them. Your either gonna Break Something, Wanna Upgrade, Get Speeding Tickets. And the equals money, If you can be responsible enough to take care of your car and whatever goes along with it more power to you. But i've seen people blame the car for being unreliable for buying a already swapped car. My friend who bought a swapped 240 was horrible about maintaining the car he ran on the same oil for 1 year, because he did'nt care about changing oil. And he delivers pizzas. gahhh, And I had to save him one time. Because he said his car would't start, when it was only out of gas! Talk about not watching your car... and yes the fuel gauge did work.

or triple A :) wait, that should be a must for every 240 owner.

to the orginal author- if really you know the motor is strong, been maintained go for it. if not, get something you'd feel safe, and worry free about.
