i got 1989 s13 coupe with sr20det torn between what i should do first...
1)silvia front end with a wide body...brand i dunno but not some shit
2)head work greddy metal head gasket, roker arm stoppers cams, cam gears,etc....(the works)
have enough to do either one....but not both

what have you done suspension wise?

02-26-2007, 12:23 AM
yeah most tuners that i know get rid of that 4x4 status first. but no one knows what you want except you. i would suggest some rims and suspension before going widebody though.
i think you should check over your car and see what needs to be repaired/replaced. it would be nice to have a front end with wide body, but what use does it do if your car breaks down because you didn't maintain it?

Suspension is always number 1.
But seeing as how that isn't a choice on your list, I will say go with motor work. There is no point in having a nice car with an unreliable motor. If you do purchase the aero, do you have enough money for proper sized rims, paint?
Answer: Motor work.

Suspension and brakes should be first. Make the car safe to drive at speed before making it faster or look prettier. All that aero won't do shit when it's flipped over at the bottom of a ravine.

think of this.. if your able to use little power and perform better as a driver with suspension and brakes I think that will prove more not only to others but one self.
thus a greater reward all around... its like time attack, each time around you shave more time off with the same amount of power = further up the pole than to be on the bottom of a higher class because you have racked up too many points in power mods.
thats just my idea on how it should be done. take it or leave it

i agree the most potential for this car IMO is suspension. but yeah if the engine is crap then go for that.

yes, i def agree. I have miata with a slow stock motor, but good suspension & tires. its a safe car to push hard and learn how to drive on the track. i also have 240 with a more powerful sr swap, but not so great stock brakes, suspension, and open diff. The 240 feels very unsafe, but it is kinda fun in its own special way b/c of that. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone else, however.
I'm not a fan of bodykits period. I think they tend to attract a lot of undesirable attention from the wrong ppl. I'd do a nicer paint-job in the oem color if I could, but even that would be at the bottom of the list of my priorities.

Rockerarm stoppers before you need a new valvetrain. Re shim it too for ultra reliability
1st i would check and make sure the swap was done right. I've heard of people buying 240's w/ sr swaps and the turbos are 2 bolts away from falling off. Check everything.

brakes and suspension first for sure. just go downhill if you want to go fast for the time being.

Definetly make sure all the little bits and pieces are in their rightful place. I would also agree with everyone else and get brakes, and suspension work first for safety. Power should be last on the list. See myself I did the swap first, so open diff, and stock suspension are still there. But out of your two choices I would say motor work before bodywork.

hahah so true +1
widebody is for cars with built suspensions that can handle with wide wheels.
handling pwns everything else. i recommend parts from SPL for a good amount of adjustability. toe/tie rods, rucas, control arms....etc. 5 lug swap and new brakes...and you have a handling monster.
then focus on your engine.

You're all wrong.
Repair ANYTHING thats broken/working weird, Maintain EVERYTHING, then, look into your wallet, and then CONSIDER suspension and brakes, if you've got the funds.
Have fun.

did all my perfomance mods first now im doing the exterior....
but the more u mod out ur car the more you break things so hopefully u do all the looks stuff first....
try not to mod it and dn;t lower it yet. Trust me do everything to the exterior so it will be reliable then when r done and u dn;t care if the care is out of commsion or not then do all the engine mods to it so if it breaks or u dn;t have a car for a month its cool

i have some after market struts with tein s type springs. i ahve already made a down payment on 5 lug conversion along with a set of axis hiro rims and r32 calipers. ill be getting my rims and calipers put on in about 2 weeks. so yeah i pretty much agreed with everyone and just wondering on what i want to do next.

lol, im still working on that one. credit cards suck. if the car runs fine i'd fix everything thats broken or unreliable, and then move onto suspension. a good suspension makes the car so much more fun.

Yea, I'm pretty sure that's what I just said.
I was really tryin to emphasis everything on the car, bushings and all that jazz, not just the motor.
Oh ok, I gotcha. I thought you were telling me I was wrong and then restating what I said and adding on to it.
That is the best advice though. If you haven't owned the car since it was brand new, there's probably something screwed up with it. People do some crazy stuff to their cars.
oh, and get some vinyls and shit to hang from your tow hook

well i hear a ticking from the motor(hopefully rockerarms stoppers, new injectors, and new spark plugs fix the noice issue.) and the car has a cold start problem so there is nothing major with the car. once i get trhe 5 lug conversion i will start my head work. ill get pics to show u guys.

are you saying that by doing exterior mods, you somehow make your car more reliable?
I don't see the logic in that at all. :ugh:

Im jsut saying form my experience and 20grand later i wish i would or done some custom work and some looks. little mods here and there but if your not going all out then you should go very far. That as of engine mods only. Sure go full suspension and defently do the brakes!!! that a must. But make the car look good. Its all about personaly prefrence. Im not saying by only doing exterior nothings going to break just dn;t try to push 14psi of a stock motor or something dumb like that. Its better to keep your car clean and comfortable rather than shity and annoying

If it was me I would check the complet car over to make sure everything is in good working condition. After you have done that put a little money into your motor and then save some money just in case something happens. Trust me I don't care how good your car is now as soon as you get the motor work or body work done something will happen, it always does when you spend a lot of money. So play it safe man. Do a little at a time and save some money for back up.

im more of a function kinda of guy. i say motor work first. youll be spending alot on the body work. and plus you should def have a very good idea on what suspension to run and wheels to go with wide body. and wheels with crazy offsets to match that kit will not be cheap. take care of motor first. make sure it can walk the walk.
