View Full Version : MR2 vs. 240sx
My friend is a die-hard MR2 fan and insists that its way better than an '93 24osx. He wants a '89 MR2. His arguement is, the car is soo much fun to drive that he doesn't care about the lack of rear seats, they can take turns at higher speeds than most things on the road. My arguement is that their more practical because of the rear seats, and they would be more fun because they are known for drifting also they look good for a cheap price. Does anyone want to add to this?(keep in mind that this is for a highschool student and your goin to need to get places with your friends)

MR2s are great cars, especially the turbo or s/c ones. MR2s have great handling, they have good wieght ratios. Having rear seats don't matter that much anyway. How many time sdo you use the ones in your car. Plus its an MR car so rear seats are a no-no. I wanted to get the MKII Turbo MR2 instead of a 240, but it would have been a ton easier to get an SR powered S13. MR2s are not too pricey but I did't want an MKI and MKII turbos are hard to find, so I stuck with the S13, even though I would still like an MR2, they are sexy cars.

Only one I've had the chance to drive was a new Spyder. . . pretty nice car, the interior had a dated look and feel.. but I actually preferred that... Very fun to drive, but real hard to control once u get it into a drift. I did my test drive in the rain, and I noticed the traction is MUCH better than in my 240.. the extra weight helps.
Although I didn't get to go to hot import nights in chicago this year, I did check the cars out in the lot beforehand... Anyone familiar with a certain orange turbo MR2 from Ontario? I followed him around Chicago before he got parked. . pretty nice. . late model JDM taillights. . I busted a nut over that car actually.

the mr2 handles better, is faster, and while it doesn't have a rear seat, its not like the 240sx's rear seats are that usable anyways...
the 240sx IS cheaper and despite the fact that it is known for drifting(on a track, who cares? ), when you shell out the extra bucks for an mr2, you do get a better performing car.

Yea I have driven an MKII MR2 turbo (My BUDDY"S)he has an apexi intake on it but other than that its pretty much bone stock. I think it drives alright i don't like the shifter and it oekward from the 240sx shifter. My car has an sr20 in it intake exhaust f/m i/c bov downpipe striaght pipe. I raced (10psi Stock) him once with to of my friends in my car that weights a totall of 360 plus a spear tire. So we race on a long strip of road and off the line i just killed him and i think i bet him more then 2 car lengths. he said that he had the greatest launch he every had and i had a decent one could've done better but some how with all the ex weight i still beat him by more then 2 car lengths so you guys go figure what you want.

if you buy a non-turbo MkII MR-2 can you ship a turbo engine from japan and easily install it? if anyone knows please tell me because i can't decide between getting a 240SX, a 86-90 RX-7, or a MKII MR-2. with all of them i am willing to ship an engine from japan. any help would be nice.

got to drive a MR2 for about a yr or so (ex-gf's car) thats how long i was with her... she had most of the little aftermarket goodies from what i remembered... anyways best time i ever ran with her car was 14.1 on 17's... i think her shit wasnt tune right... as to handling wise in my opinion the 240 has a better feel but then again she nevered let me push her car to the max so i could be wrong... only thing i hate about the MR2 is the middle console... gives alot of chest pains to girls while on the road

It's not worth swapping a turbo engine into a non-turbo MR2 unless you score a really great deal on one or the other. They're tough to find, but MR2 Turbos ARE out there. The later JDM turbos do make more power than ours, though.
The non-turbo Mk2 MR2 is kind of a sad story... It could've been an extremely fun car, and in fact in other countries it was... but for some reason the US version got a Camry engine instead of a nice high-winding 3S-GE. I believe they also softened up the suspension, so what you end up with is a slow car with a boring engine that doesn't corner as well as it should.
This forum never disappoints... yet another round of "it sucks because I beat one in a street race" anecdotes whenever anyone compares any car to the 240SX
