There is a 1990 240sx for sale in my city. It is a 5 spd., fully loaded, new CV joints, sunroof, new exhaust, good tires & rims, black. int. & ext. The lady is selling it for $2800 Canadian (About $1800 American I believe). It has 187,000 km on it. The only problem is that the emergency brake doesn't function. I was wondering how difficult it is to fix this problem. I realize it depends on the type of damage to the brake, but aparantly she said it's like the cable has snapped? I haven't seen the car yet, so I don't know full out myself the condition, but I was just wondering if anyone could give me some insight to how difficult/easy it is to fix such a problem. Thanks.

Getting a new e-brake cable(s) is easy, replacing the cable is a bit more troublesome, as you would have to drop the drive shafts, so you can get access to mount the cable the way it routes, which is under the drive shaft.

What would be required to drop the shafts? Is there a tutorial on this? What would have to be done? Level of difficulty? Tools?
Thanks.

Its not too hard. It is in two parts. There should be 4(maybe 6) bolts holding the parts together. A good socket set should be all you need to take them out. Then, there is a bearing and its housing that the shaft goes though that bolts to the underside of the car. probably 2 more bolts there. Now that they're separated, you should be able to angle the back part out of the way(it is attached to the diff with a CVD type joint) and the front part should just pull straight out of the back of the tranny.

I think i know which car your talking about, on autotrader.ca right?
Well when i saw it at first i was thinkin, since when do RWD cars have CV joints? Do they because as all of us I am not perfect. I could be horribly wrong. But as soon as i read that I thought their trying to get more money by saying more repairs were done.
It's a nice pic tho.

stop stop no wait no.... (kinda sounds like my last date)
You might not need a new cable....
My car had no functioning ebrake when i bought it...the cause was that when the back brakes were done, some dipshit knocked the cables off of their little hooks, and left them hanging there.
Take off the tires (if you buy the car) as if you were gonna change back brakes, you'll see the hooks on the calipers. Even if one side is disconnected, the ebrake wont work. You can see this from underneath the car or through the spokes in the wheel kindof...
Before going through a lot of trouble, just check and make sure this isn't the problem. For all you know, the ladies friend's drunk husband might have said.... *gurgle* the cable snapped *burp*
