I just put an HKS Hi-Power Silent on my s14 5-speed, and whenever i decel it makes an awful banging noise from underneath the car. I jacked it up and saw that the middle silencer is hitting the driveshaft and causing this noise, any ideas on how to stop this or what may be causing it?

beat on the resonator with a hammer

u try gettin stiffer hangers? i kno cusco sells some. try that out and see if it helps. The other thing u could try is going to a muffler shop and having them trouble shoot this problem. they could prolly lower it down by heating the existing hangers or wat not. but those guys deal with this shit on a daily basis so your best bet would be to go to a muffler shop. Good luck

stiffer/better engine and tranny mounts, stiffer hangers

whoa. I get a noise under deceleration too, I always thought it was a leak after the cat, but maybe I have the same problem. I have an HKS Hi Power 65 mm. Does yours come really close to the diff too?

It's already close to the chassis. Stiffer mounts won't do anything except make it worse. Best bet it to remove a mount and let your exhaust sit lower, or beat the resonator down a little so it can clear.

This isn't directed to the original poster, but you can also get noise from your exhaust hitting your rear swaybar.

stiffer hangars would bring it right up to touch the driveshaft, it is close to the differential but it doesnt hit taht so right now thats not a concern

mine taps the diff sometimes when I get clutch chatter from my 6 puck, so I wrapped the area around that with some heat resistant material so there isn't any noise from the touching. Not quite the same issue with the driveshaft I guess. I will check mine soon to see how my clearance is (by the driveshaft)

It IS touching the drive shaft. So why would he put hangers on and raise it up even more? He needs to lower it or dent the exhaust resonator a little.

i concur ^, also, its quite funny, because i once had the SSAC knockoff and it never hit the driveshaft.. though it did knock against the diff case..

oh well, deal with it. bang it out like a borad on prom night

and if you are still worried.... be a man, run open downpipe

Also looks like it only needs a tiny bit of hammering to fix it.

Just get a custom exhaust in the first place.
I don't think I have ever seen anyone (well in NZ at least) with a premade exhaust, they can't be that much cheaper can they?

use some hose clamps on your exhaust hangers

This could be a good excuse to get a new tranny mount

lol if it was me i'd cut it up and redue the entire system. but if you wanted stiff mounts i'm sure the nismo mounts from the dealership would be cheaper then the cusco ones. but hey if a hammer works use a hammer. I just like the saw/weld combo better

HAHAHA....

Actually ther'es really isn't any fitment issues with the eBay exhausts. I don't know why people knock ebay aftermarket so much. I've been buying stuff from various sellers and have had no problems. I have one for my S13 and it fit better than my Apexi N1 dual on my old S14. The Apexi tip rubbed my bumper and melted a part of it away until it rubbed no more....

AND I got mine for less than 200 bucks PLUS silencer!!! It is a little on the louder side but I'm happy with it. I learned the budget lesson with my old car. Why spend more??

And to the original poster.....you need a new tranny mount, as previously mentioned, that's it. Could have saved you some bangin and torchin... :(

I'll bet your mount has no gap in between the two rubber points, does it? Go with Nismo, stiffer, last longer than stock and really not that much more vibration.
