sorry i dont got a picture of it but ill try to explain where it is. its the small square looking black box that has a tube running from that to the air box itself. my question is what is that hooked up to and do i really need it. im trying to take off whatever i dont need in that area of the engine bay.

its just probably part of the airbox, if it is and you want to take it out do it, but if it has wires of some sort running through it you might wanna follow where it leads to then go from there ...

That's your resonator made to keep engine suction noise down.
Most people take it off.
And there is zero need for it if you have an aftermarket intake.
Without the resonator, your intake will sound nice and loud... without any other mods. Its just there to make the car more friendly to the average buyer.

he might also be talking about the AIV valve which you can also remove, its just an emissions item, just take both the box's out leave the hole in the side of the airbox open, and for the aiv one, the one on the top piece, just take the whole assembly out and plug the piece that runs to your exhaust
AIV on a 240sx?
Didn't realize they had it.

well i took it out of my ka-e and it makes a horrible noise wen accelerating and has a horrible idle. the hose leads to the exhaust manifold on the car. i tried to plug it up but wen i give it some throttle, the plug would fly out. so what i did was just leave the AIV box in there and just take out the stock air filter box.
Wow, I've owned two of those things and never saw it. I must be partially retarded.
I had a 91 SE and a 92 plain.

You plug the exhaust port with a thread in plug or a crimped OE line. Obviously trying to plug the hose side won't work since it's under pressure. I can't believe someone who be stupid enough to try that.

It may be a box to collect water in the event it got sucked up from the intake so that it won't get into the intake mani and lock the engine.

You're kidding right?
We've already answered this, the box mounted to the shock tower is the AIV. The box under the airbox is the resonator. And all of this is in the FSM and has been heavily discussed for more than 15 years.
