Question about ignition lock/switch.

My ignition lock/switch is giving me some trouble. I've looked at replacements and I've looked at the FSM but I'm confused. Is it one peice? Previous vehicles of mine were two seperate parts. The lock/switch (where you insert the key) can be jiggled around in the steering column with ease and moves a few mm on each side. Sometimes (actually a lot) when I try to start the car (90 hatch) I have to move the steering wheel around to get some tension off the lock before I can turn the key...and then when I do I must turn the switch as far as it can go before it engages the starter. That being said...would I be best to replace the whole thing? Or is ithis stuff adjustable? In my truck there were rods that went down the column I could adjust. If it's not adustable and it's just worn due to age and I need to replace it; do I just need the lock/switch assembly I've seen for like $150?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That's correct. It's not adjustable. You can easily replace it, but the part is expensive. Dealership only, I believe.

In any case, they are fairly easy to remove. Once you get the plastic cover panels off the steering column, you'll see a couple of long, brass 'studs' holding the ignition switch onto the column. You'll need to drill those out and replace with new ones, which may or may not come with the switch.

Bah, I was affraid of that. Everything I looked at just showed a lock/switch on a bunch of long wires and a plug. Oh well I was prepared for the worst. It looks like the thing I'm gonna order has the screws...I saw the procedure you were talking about in the FSM. I gotta drop the column next weekend anyway for a new speedo and some LED replacements in the cluster while I'm at that...I guess I'll just add this to the list.

Do you need a new gauge cluster? I've got one from a '92 hatch that works perfectly for sale.
