I have been having the infamous ticking sound from the timing chain on my sr20det for a while now and took it in to be looked at. The shop quoted me about 15 hours of labor due to having to tear the head apart but I wanted to know if it can be done without taking off the head and maybe being able to reach in to do it. Is there real danger with the timing chain? Ive heard of people just taking off the guides and running it. Would I only have to replace the tensioner?

I tried searching but to no real answer just people having problems with doing it.If Im wrong please direct to me some threads.

Thanks

to change the guides and the chain, u have to remove the head. im pretty sure theres pretty much no way to do it any other way or it will just be a bigger pain in the ass. u take the head off, oil pump assembly (cover) and the rest is pretty staright forward.

yeah this topic was already covered in "SR20DET redtop Timing Cover"

But yeah you gotta rip off the head and remove the two oil pans, oil strainer and oil baffle to remove the oil pump

whats this about take out the timing chain guides? you do that you might as well chunk a grenade in there while ur at it.
