Burning Oil on stock KA

I have bone-stock 93 hatch with the stock KA-DE, and there's blue smoke in the exaust, and smells like a two-stroke so i know it's burning oil. It's been sitting for some time, and i'm not too sure what the problem is. There is oil under the car, so i'm going to replace the oil filter and oil pan gasket. There's other stuff i have to do as well (timing chain rattle, bushings), but the oil problem has me a little worried. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else could be causing the burning oil?

If your leaking oil and seeing blue smoke, first check your coolant level to see if its filled to the proper level, the worst that could happen it that your water pump is bad. check the oil for poper level and add oil if necessary. next turn on engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes,check for leak and fix it. if the engine ir to dirty, clean it off it will male it easier for yo too fin the leak. Now i'm not sure how much your chain rattles, but your chain tensioner make be stuck and if thats the case its time to open up the engine or take it to someone who can.

if u let the car idle for awhile and take off, does a small puff of blue smoke come out, or a large cloud of blue smoke? if its a small puff, it may be valve seals. if its a large cloud, its probably piston rings.

i was leaking a shitload of oil out of my valve cover i re-did the seal with some rtv and then changed my oil to royal purple 10w 30 and she stopped burning oil. also i noticed smoke stopped coming out of my exhaust. now once i mash on the gas i get a puff of carbon build up coming out it's not very smoke like. it's like black dust flying out of the muffler.

Thanks for the help guys. God, i hope i dont need new rings. I'm going to have the car on a lift pretty soon, so i will take a look at all the things you suggested before i take it there. Hopefully it's just the filter or pan gasket. That's what was wrong on my friend's car a when he had the same problem.

Also, check to see if your front and rear crankshaft seals are leaking. Mine were and then my clutch blew, so it was easy fix to me. I doubt it'll be easy if they do need to be changed but you might as well take a look at EVERYTHING, just in case.

Also, I've been recommended to change the PVC valve.

well, there's a fine line between leaking oil and burnning oil. If you're burning oil that means that oil is physically getting in the combustion chamber b/c of bad rings, a bad head gasket, a warped head gasket, or maybe bad valve seals. All of these things are relatively serious and won't be fixed by merely changing an oil filter or an oil pan gasket, etc.

My guess, based on common problems with high mile KAs I have seen, would be the valve stem seals. Could be other things, but thats the most common gremlin.

blueish-white smoke = coolant (smells sweet)
dark brown/black = oil (smells like burnt oil
