I drive a lot on the freeway in my 240 and I hate the short 5th gear.... 1-4 is cool, but I really dont like being at like 3k at 67 mph.
What are the options for either longer 5th gears or differentials? I've got the 6 bolt axles and don't want to replace them if i don't have to.

You could get a lower ratio ring gear, but that will lower your accel speeds. For that option you are spending about $500 for a ring gear.
Other than that, all you can do is deal with it.

how about just a different diff? any ones with longer legs that the 240 that bolt in?

The definite easiest solution would be larger wheels/tires. The r&p is the gear part of the differential. That is what you replace, not the entire unit. Search son

A Q45 pumpkin( larger driveshaft flange) will not bolt into our cars, nor a Z32TT. You would have to yank the internals and install them in your pumpkin

That's what makes it fun DO IT!

alrigt... so the z32 and q45 internals will fit in my diff though?

no.
R200 is different than R230, the numbers are ring gear diameters.
IIRC its possible get the whole 230 Rear end and axles into an S-chassis.
your car is gonna be so piss slow with a 3.6 gear though

no thats not exactly what I meant to say. Basically any R200 internals including q45 , M30 ring but not the pinion, will fit. I added the fact that the Z32TT would not fit because its a R230v, its internals are larger. To tell you the truth most of this information is already available in the archives and faq section between a faq I wrote and 3 other ones.

I'm going to be getting a S15 Spec-R MT final drive. 3.69
My goal is for high MPG via low RPM cruising.
It will not be much fun to fart around in anymore.
Looks a little something like this:

Try my gear ratio calculator spreadsheet. (http://home.comcast.net/~amyers35/GearRatios.xls)

Is there a way I could figure which gear ratio I have if I know my car gets I believe 79mph @ 3000rpm my car is automatic with a JDM 180SX VLSD and my wheel and tire size are:
18" wheels with 225/40/18
From that info could one find out what final gear ratio I have even though I got an auto tranny?
P.S. I dont have Excel just the viwer but I do have Microsoft Works Suite 2006 and I was able to open it with Microsoft Works Spreadsheet and I can make changes and it does the recalculating automatically to :).......
