View Full Version : Trans hump gets very hot

I have a strange problem that I was wondering if anyone has experienced on their car. I have a '93 coupe manual trans. After maybe 5 minutes of normal driving, the transmission hump gets real hot. Its basically right where my right leg is. Has anyone heard of this?

My S14 does that too, but only when I drive for a while, maybe like over 45 minutes. It gets pretty hot by the gas pedal, the center console, and seeps up through the shift boot. I was thinking it may be the exhaust manifold.

Nothing out of the ordinary. It gets hot. Just have to deal with it.

Sounds like the problem I am having. I took the carpeting out and I don't drive the car very long to see how hot it really gets.

it's from the exhaust header/piping.

i took the carpet out of my 240 (track/weekend car so it doesn't matter)

I then proceeded to burn my feet at a track day.

I bought some heatshielding that sticks to the underside of the car to keep my feet from melting.

yeah my foot gets really really hot when i drive for awhile to, i thought it was just the floor heater vent.. ?? haha my bad

happens to me in my s13 too, even when I was NA

even with double carpetting insulation.

Its from the exhaust, but also radiates to the tranny.

Next time the tranny is down, will cover the area with some heat shield of some sort.

right under the driver seat, not under the gas pedal, toward the tranny.

my downpipe use to get my feet really hot. Just throw some insulation around down there. It'll show her.

It's funny that I noticed this too and I thought that something was wrong with my car. But I guess it happens to everyone's 240.

Well I guess I'm not the only one! It sounds like a good idea once I take the engine out to put some heat shield down there. I figured it was the transmission getting REALLY overworked.

i had this prob but only when the torque converter on the auto died... after the 5 spd swap, no heat issues

i have a 91 240 HB and my hump gets very hot. almost uncomfortable after a few hours of driving (did it from Iowa to NY) with no cruise and in under 20 hrs! why? cuz i can and more importantly cuz i love my nissan :P

anyway at first i thought it was due to the lousy new carpeting that was installed in my car car before i bought it. my car also didnt come with floormats.(i thought that maybe they forgot to lay down a lil insulation underneath my gas pedal foot and esp near my hump my HUMP MY HUMP!! golly Fergie is a hottie...anyway... i also had a test pipe welded in when i installed my catback exhuast.....

to solve the heat problem i "borrowed" an extra Mazda6 rear passenger floor mat and place it right on my drivers side floor. not only does it match my black interior...it also looks snazzy super cool now that i have a plush and inviting floormat shielding my size 12 feet....and now i dont suffer anymore because it was rough. my kicks would seriously feel as if they were on fire and i was like "man im getting damn sweaty driving this sweet car". maybe it was the excitement of driving a 240?!??? or maybe the rubber soles in my Circas were getting melted to my heels!!!

Yeah i have a fully gutted interior. I have to put blue tape on my heel to stop my heel from burning. It gives that "I drive" look to your style

I hate to bring back a dead thread but I have a funny bit to share. My girlfriend recently drove my car for an extended period of time. After she was done doing what she needed to do she takes her sneaker off, shows me the damage, and wouldn't you know that the S.O.B. melted about 1/4 off of the sole.

Once I get some free time I am going to try to write up a post on how to prevent this from happening without being too ghetto.

This is a very common problem amongst the s-chassis guys, its a little worst to have an sr20det as well. What I found out to help is first insulating that tranny "hump" with heat wrap. Not through the inside of the car but in the tranny "hump" area itself. I strongly recommend this with the motor or transmission of out the car. Then if your are SR20DET powered, wrap the exhaust elbow and downpipe with heat wrap as well. After I performed these steps, My car didn't become a shoe melter no more.

carnagexxxx, thanks for bringing this thread back up to the top. I was wondering for some time if it was my tranny or my exhaust. I'm SR powered and it's definitely not as bad as some people on here but the heat creeps through to my shift knob. Oh well, I guess I'll just have a nice hand warmer this winter...:rawk:
