View Full Version : Function/Form coilovers?? With shock dynos??

Well, in my never ending obssession with my suspension setup, I have pretty much brought it down to stance or kts for coils (although Megan doesnt seem too bad at the moment). I have been also trying to learn to read shock dyno graphs as damping is the key to how they perform and not necessarily stupid amounts of rate. Basically want a properly damped daily driver coilver system with 7k front/6k rear (or maybe 400+ front and 300+ rear). Now, I ran into these boys over at honda-tech (please dont relegate to crap until you read the post, thank you) and it seems quality (but there is no way you can tell by pics, ofcourse)
Now, what really caught my eye is the shock dyno sheet they provide with thier kits. Now, you can probably argue that they can just dyno one set and send out a copy of that dyno with all thier damper systems and hope that no one find out. Now, seeing as though they have been around for more than 2 years and have sold numerous coilovers, you would think someone would have link 1 and 1 and made two. So, I kinda doubt that about them.
Anyways, I will be emailing the guy about more info these but I figured I will come over here and see what you guys think. Here is a link
fucntion/form (http://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1708547)
Let me know what you guys think of this set.
Thanks, Chris
LOL so like, why does their shock dyno only have one plot point on it? Those type of shock dyno graphs are really most useful to average Joe's to see a shocks damping range so having a shock dyno on one setting really defeats it's usefulness................
Their coilover look like every other generic set. In fact the brackets look exactly like ksports.

yeah that graph is worthless
also 7/6 is retarded soft for an s chassis

7/6 might be soft, but, I really dont feel like jumping into something stiffer. I would prefer to use sway bars to combat body role as well as proper tires as those. I personally dont need tremendous amounts of rate for DD duty. Plus, I will get another set of springs for track duty (and no, no drifter here, sorry).
Thanks, for the comments guys!! I am going to show the graph to one of my acquantances over there at koni to see what he thinks. But it seems he might be come to the same conclusion as you folks here

Ive been wondering about these coils my self? they do look similar to Ksport, but i wouldnt say theyre they same, just rebadged. if anything, they may be the same shock, but the brackets do not look identical to ksport.
I asked a good friend from hondatech and he told me theyre just like megan and ksport, but theyve had superb customer service.
has anyone else heard anything about these guys?

damn dave brought this thread back from the dead, but yea i've basically heard the same thing, that they are very similar to the ksports and megans, but have yet to actually ride in a car with them.

Elaborate, or what weight does your opinion hold?

I was talking to Brandon from Tunerz Image about these a while ago, when he had his thread up about the coilovers. I tested them out for a while and the ride itself isn't bad. The damping adjustments are made easy since they are all adjustable from the top. But I don't like the design of the knob since I thought it stuck out too far in the air. A little awkward, but it doesn't hit the hood or anything.
Another flaw: When you look at the camber plates, you don't immediately see something wrong. But on the car (S13) you see that it's hard to actually adjust because the adjustments slide on the very sides of the hole... Hope that makes sense. Haha. Hard to explain without pictures.. I tied to make a "representation" of how they fit in the car.

The hardware they used isn't fantastic. The studs that hold the strut to the tower are made of cheap material. I don't know if this is common also with Megans or with KSport, or any other "similar" brand. But it looks like the stud doesn't have a lot of spline in the actual camber plate. It sits flush so there's probably only a little bit of spline for it to grip to. So when I was removing them, I had to break the studs off because the stud was just spinning in the plate. Really annoying. They were also kind of long and worried me if they would hit the hood or not. But they didn't. An easy fix nonetheless.
Customer service is excellent. Ride quality is good on SoCal roads. Performed excellent on the track.
I had Megans on my S14 and went threw 3 shocks just daily driving. No experience with KSports. I also had the MR's for a couple years. The F2's maybe 5 months.
About too soft of spring rate for S-chassis:
That isn't true. It really depends on what kind of driving you do. When SCC premiered their 1g set up for the S13 they were on 6/5 with stiffer sways iirc... (which is a suspension theory I've heard over and over again, soft springs/stiff sways).
F2 lets you choose your spring rate. I don't know how to read that dyno chart, and I don't know if the shock body changes per spring rate.
Hope that helps someone.

Uhhh, you know you have to shuffle the bolts to adjust camber right?
at any rate, they're china, same as every other coilover under 1500$

Yes. But I've seen/played with many a'camber plate and the design is the worse I've worked with. It makes adjustments very annoying. Maybe I was having an off day (don't think so), but I never had the problem with any other design, MR's included.

Wasn't there just a big thread on these in the tech section?
If they're providing dyno charts, then post up the ones for the s13/s14 and I'll take a look at them. But they're probably going to be the same as everything else. Just different colors.

someone point that out again, thatll be the 3rd time.
Haha, sorry CoasTek240. I wasn't making fun of you. I was talking to Wiisass since he was saying that there was recently a lengthy discussion on shocks and suspensions...

I just traded my Tein Super Drift for Type2 and i have problem with the camber plates, i tried to set them all the way to negative but the angle of wheels dont even look the same, (right side is very negative, left side is just lil bit negative) does any1 have same problem like me??

are the knuckles bolted onto the coils at the same point? there's some wiggle room in there and if one is bolted leaning out while the other is bolted leaning in it can cause this...

Thanks for the reply.
Thats what im thinking to, feel like something is not right here but I got so confused cuz I thought as long as i cant bolt them together, they will stay right.
