ive searched and i cant find, are there any guides or write ups on the basics of welding? im aware that this is a very broad subject and there is alot of stuff that goes into it but if anyone has any links thatd be great!

get a mig.. get sheilding gas... no flux core... take some 1/4" plate.. draw footballs with the torch that are offset to each other slightly, like move 1/8" over each football with a football that's maybe 1/2-5/8" long.. when you draw the bottom half of the ball you'll see your bead is red hot and molten. When it goes from red to starting to cool draw the top half of the football. So it should be a perpetual cycle where the cooling red part is chasing your electrode.. play from there... adjust your distance from the metal to adjust your bead width.. the angle the torch makes to the metal is critical as well..
welding isn't something you can read about... you must do.. and practice practice practice..

thats only half true. I say that because having the right feel is only half of it. Setting up the machine right is the other half.

having the right feel will tell you how to setup the machine so... practice practice practice practice. Oxy-Acetylene is a good way to practice for beginners also, it will help you understand welding a little more.

what kind of welder do you have cause it depends like sticking welder as above like what silverbullet said or wired welder.
