View Full Version : Re-wiring my electric fan.. need positive power source

Ok so I am reconfiguring my efan setup.. Ive had it run off a tempurature relay straight to the battery forever *meaning the fan may kick on even after the car is shut off* .. but now im putting in a new fan and want to use that relay to a ignition source. So it will still be tempurature activated to kick on at a certain temp, but will not come on when the car is off.
Is there a source I can tape into from teh relay box? thanks

for me, since i don't have a/c with my sr, i pulled the relay out for a/c of the relay box and ran the power wire straight into where the relay normaly plugs in. One of the holes has a 12v power only when the ignition is on..

hmmm interesting.. that would work, but for me i still have my a/c in the car, not wired up at the momment but I am planin to keep it. i wonder what else I could get it from... I did remove my windshield sprayer tank/nozles, i wonder if that has a + ignition source..

Is this for a S13 or S14? Of course your washer pump has a (+)power source and a ground that is switched with the wash switch on the steering wheel. So that will not work. Tell me what car it is and I'll check out the wiring diagrams, what you need is a ignition power sounce and you also need to fuse the e-fans (30A or so).

Use your fuel pump relay output as a source for power for your fan relay.
It will only come on when the pump is on (which means when the fuel pump primes the rail and when it's running).

thanks guys, s13.
Regarding the fuel pump relay... i read that works, but im scared about putting too much strain on that circuit and dont want to fry something.

yeah don't usde the fuel pump source. thats to vital of a part to mess with

a cleaner install if you want the thing powered when the car is off would be to use the post where the starter cable bolts to the fuse block distributor, by the 75a lin. im not sure why you wouldnt want to be able to turn the fan on when the car is off?

Its not gonna do a whole lot if the coolant isn't circulating...

yup, fuel pump relay ftw.
Easy and convinent at startups. insteading always having to switch a switch. or some ghetto way.

Haha...
BLK-YEL = Fuel Pump (+)positive
First you need a relay,then:
-Terminal 86 should be powered by the BLK-YEL wire (+)positive
-Terminal 85 should be connected to (-)ground.
-Terminal 30 should be powered directly from the batter or by the WHT wires that come from the battery (it should also be fused with about a 30A fuse I would imagine.
-Terminal 87 should then go to the E-Fans as (+)positive.(to the temp relay or however, it is just a (+)positive power source.
This means the relay will only have power when the fuel pump is operating, which means only when the ECM allows the fuel pump to run, so bassically only when the engine is running. It only puts a 10mA higher load on the fuel pump circuit which is nothing really.

if u want to make it easy and in my opinion look cool just hardwire it to the battery and put a switch in ur dash with a little 5-10v chip to run the switch so u can have it on whenver u want as long as u want... then u wont get any interference wiring it to a relay and ull never overheat

Sounds dumb...Just my opinion OEM look FTW...

ledzeppelin240: Is there nothing wrong with running the fan(s) all the time? I thought it was bad to run the fans the whole time the car was on?
Unless I'm missing something. (not being an ass, I really don't know)

not wrong. you want your car to get up to temp and stay there. fan should come on when you get hot to keep it cool. if it's on all the time (assuming you have an efficient system), you will be running too cool.

Rule #1: people who don't understand electricity should not design electrical circuits.
Otherwise we'll all be dead.
Listen to the person who posted about the relay. He gave you everything you needed. Normally I don't recommend piggy-backing off of any of the existing circuitry; however, 10 mA is so small compared to the regular current that the fuel pump is drawing so it will not be noticeable at all.
But still, there will be times when you will want to have the fan run when the engine is off. Tapping the fuel pump relay will not give you this functionality.
Just do some research and do it the right way, or invest in a good fire-suppression system.

I say just keep using the relay/batter set up.
If done correctly, and your fans are strong enough, they shouldn't stay on for more than a minute (at most).
Plus, people will constantly remind you that your car is still running, and that's just awesomness, and then you can be all like, "no it's not, it's just a figment of your imagination" and then they'll think they're crazy and stuffs!
Yeah, hilarity will ensure.
So in closing, just keep it the way it is.

Haha...Almost every electrical Thread involves me and "g6civcx".
But he did bring up a valid point, I know some factory E-Fans will run even after the ignition is off. But most only run when the ignition is on. So it all depends like "g6civcx" said there are those times you want them to run when the engine is off.
I think the main thing here is MAKE SURE IT IS FUSED.....

5.7L taurus fan FTW
Got the low positive wired up, shouldnt need the high positive unless Im having serious cooling problems
anyways i kept the wiring I had before, which was having it thru the tempurature relay fused to the battery. Probably take me a few days/drives to fine tune the fan so it doesnt come on too late, or too early as where it runs all the time and kills the battery.

alright yo i'm new on this forum and this is gonna be my first post for you guys...
DO NOT WIRE FAN TO FUEL PUMP FUSE!!!!!!!!!! IT WILL OVER-LOAD AND UR CAR WILL ACT FUNNY AND IF DOES'T ACT FUNNY THEN IM SURE SOONER OR LATER IT WILL!
I ONCE WIRED MY FAN TO MY FUEL PUMP FUSE AND MY CAR WHEN I WOULD GO TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND, TURN THE KEY TO OFF AND PULL THE KEY MY ENGINE WOULD STILL STAY RUNNING FOR LIKE 3 SECONDS THEN SHUT OFF..... SO THEN I'M LIKE OKAY SO I DISSCONCTED MY FAN WIRE OFF THE FUEL PUMP FUSE, I STARTED MY CAR UP, I SHUT IT BACK OFF AND EVERYTHING WAS NORAML. THEN AGAIN I TESTED IT OUT... SO I RE-CONNECT THE FAN WIRE TO THE FUEL PUMP FUSE, I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RAN AGAIN FOR ANOTHER 3 SECONDS LONGER... SO I FINALLY JUST GOT A SWITCH AND RAN THE FAN TO A SWITCH. AND NOW MY CAR SHUTS OFF NORAML NOW..
DO NOT WIRE FANS TO FUEL PUMP FUSE'S OR UR CAR MIGHT JUST SHUT OFF FUNNY LIKE MINE WAS DOING.

tempurature relay fused to the battery
Like said above, a thermister that can be adjusted..
If the temp is set right (about 185*) it will only run at that temp. and then shut off. So when the ignition is off it will only run for a bit at that temp. I personally would wire the relays signal coil into the fuel pump so only when the fuel pump is operating the fans operate.

yah its a fan thermister or whatever (sounds like its misspelled
