View Full Version : RB Swap trouble

I just finished my RB swap into my S14, but it doesn't want to start, and it turns off after 4 minutes of running when it does start.

I put the whole dash harness and engine harness into my 240, and I am pretty sure everythings connected like it was in the clip. I have the fuel pump hotwired.

What is the idle supposed to sound like? When it starts, it sounds smooth for the first 10 seconds or so, but after that it starts sounding rougher and not as nice. It doesn't sound bad, though. Before it turned off today, it went back to the smooth sound. I didn't notice whether or not it did that the last two times I started it.

Would a sensor in the engine cause this, say it weren't grounded and gave the wrong signal to the ECU? Does anybody have an R32 Wiring Diagram (complete)?

Could it be because the ECU doesn't control the fuel pump, and doesn't know the pressure, to adjust it? Is there a fuel pressure regulator? If so, what color wires are they in the R32 Harness, so I can wire it properly?

The car is in Santa Ana, if anybody wants to stop by and look, but I have limited hours because of school and work.

Thanks!

To answer some of your ?s yes there is a pressur regulator, and its vacume regulated. There is or should be a fuel pump relay that receives a voltage signal to tell the ECU that the motor is trying to run & it also supplies power to the pump, since you have it hotwired this might be your problem. Or check all grounds, hell make sure your batt has enough juice, then investigate your spark. What pump do you have sound to me like its either runing out of fuel supply or there some issue with the spark going out ,or you got hella vaccume leaks,or boost/pressure leak.

Will it stay runing if you give it throttle. Will it rev/how does it rev. There are no wires that go to the fuel press. regulator that I know of.

It sounds like the relay sees the engine running, tells the ECU, which turns on the fuel pump, or which is exactly what I am doing with the hotwire. The vacuum lines are disconnected, so that could be the problem. Exactly what is the vacuum, though? Is there an actual vacuum device, or does the intake cause the vacuum from sucking the air?

I bought a new fuel pump, because today I think I figured out it isn't getting enough fuel, although it could easily be the regulator. Earlier I started the car, and it coughed into action like before, and then ran very smooth, like it should. after about 30 seconds, it dropped maybe 50 - 200 rpm and sounded like a lawn mower. I disconnected the fuel pump, and it died right away. I reconnected the fuel pump, started it again, it fired right up and ran smooth, then it dropped back into the lawnmower idle, then died right away, like it ran out of fuel again, then wouldn't start.

It revved in the lawnmower stage; I didn't get a chance to rev while it ran smooth. I haven't tried revving before it dies; I can't really predict when it will die, and by the time it does it is too late to save it.

Hello, yea put the new pump that will/should eliminate the suspect fuel problem. If that doesnt fix it,I would look for vaccume leaks at the intake manifold. O yea vaccume for the regulator should come from the intake manifold or a fitting on the throttle body using a small dia vac hose.

Ok, the fuel pressure was 50 PSI, so it is the fuel pump. I need to wire it to the RB ECU. Does anybody know which wires to match up?

yeah, I asked him on wed., but he didn't know. I haven't asked his shop, though. . . where does he work?
