I was wondering what is the difference between the stock hood and the carbon fiber one , and the stock trunk and the carbon fiber trunk.

any one can help?

thank you

in a car like an s14, the hood is fuckign heavy.... carbon fiber hoods are superlight .... but you wont buy one, you'd probably buy some 5-600 frp carbon fiber decently light alternative....

you could always save weight by buying lighter wheels, because wheels weight matters....blah..oh and helium in your tires...

anyhow... to contribute....

yes even the cheap-dick vis hood will be lighter (by 7-10 lbs), other ways to lighten your shit would be to strip the interior... also the sound dampening stuff weighs like 30lbs...

but honestly man, im sure there are like eleventy-billion threads about this... Search noobz0rzz1!!11

slim fast will lighten your car too...

but really, the hood on an s13 is heavy too.. but the trunk is really nothing.. but im sure the CF version of it will cut a few pounds..

taking out the sound deading tar(or what ever it is) will ligther your car by 50-60 pounds i believe

S13 remove the Power Seat Belts (Track/ Motor/ etc...) its about 10lbs per side.
Use Dry Ice to remopve the sound proof material and be sure to pull from the Firewall also.
Wheels, Brakes, Driveshaft, Hood, etc..

Shaving weight on a car is the same as trying to shave time off your track record... its alot of work and the impovement is minimal.

S13 hood is a lead composite.

Stock is 40lbs or something stupid like that.

My Car should curb in the 2400s, Once I pull My wipers and get a hood and finish stripping the sound deadening it should be right at the 2400 mark, maybe lower.

If you care about weight, strip the bumpers, like 50lbs each right at the poles of the car, robo belt assys are heavy, all the interior peices add up, stereos add up, IMO the sound deadening itself isnt that heavy, but it looks like shit if you leave it in.

as for it not being worth it, spending the money for titanium bolts or some wackness like that wouldn't be worth it, but the free stuff and the stuff that helps in another aspect is worth it. I know my car starts feeling KA slow when I throw 100lbs back in it.

hahaha yah, the stock s14 hood is super heavy like 48 pounds or something,

best bet would be makes sure your not fat, I love when i see super fat doods in crx's etc. with gutted interior. Its equal to a skinny guy with full interior :keke:

sux to be fat. fat people are so unlucky. lol im just joking. just joking. shit i'm trying to gain weight! just don't have any pasengers. i can tell the diff when i let my bigger friends get in. 200+lbs yeah i can tell. gutted interior. love the light car! miata super light! i hade to pick it up and put it on my back, this one time, to get it across a river.

to answer your question along with the rest of the answers....
also if you have the hatch carbon is way lighter than stcok. anything carbon fiber is basically lighter than stock!

search for weight reduction. there are some write ups, pix, more info. just fyi. :)

yeah im suprised nobody mentioned up until teamslideshow, AC weighs like 40 lb not to mention removing a belt will also put less tension on the crankshaft and the rad core will get more air flowing over it.

sunroof delete will save another 40-50 lbs with motor and glass taken out, and a piece of metal welded over. altho i think it looks like ass....

to everyone with no sound deadening: is it THAT much louder? im thinking about taking it out and just leaving interior in for daily driving, and just pulling the rear interior out when i go track it since it only takes like 20 minutes to take it all off. but would it really be that much of a difference in noise level?

byhi

^^^ it is noticeably louder... BUT, we didnt put the carpet back in which probably played a part too because of vibration/resonation

For weight removal suggestions that don't sacrifice safety, for starters get a lighter battery, FRP/CF Hood (you could remove the latch and use pins, but if not installed correctly, it will undermine my safety point), remove the spare tire, lightweight exhaust (Ti?), remove passenger seat, remove A/C components, remove the tire jack and iron, lighter flywheel and crank pulley, CF drive shaft (as previously suggested), emissions removal, there might be more, but that is the jist of it.

Now if safety is not priority, you don't mind road noise, and don't care for music do the following in addition to the above:
replace the steering wheel with a lighter one, remove airbag assembly (if equipped), remove sound deadening and carpet interior as suggested, remove bumper support, remove all speakers and stereo equipment, remove the read deck lid, remove (cut) excess metal from the trunk area (spare jack compartments and such), smaller aluminum radiator with single electric fan, fender linings, seatbelt assemblies with exception to the driver side unless using a harness, etc. I know there is more, but you can search for that.

If you are a tough guy, you could also remove the PS pump and belt.

How much do all the power steering components weigh? they cant be too heavy or are they?

BAh..... if your so concerned about weight... just put more power to the wheels to lug the weight around... the end...

powersteering isnt much but u also gain HP from the fact that its lets stress on the crank shaft cuz 1 less belt.

another way to get the car down in weight is rewire. IE PAINLESS wiring kit, u can cut out about 30 lbs of wiring i believe. but thats only if your gonna track the car. u dont want to do it for a daily driver, its overkill.

when i did my s13 silvia front end conversion it lightened up quite a bit. fiberglass fenders and front bumper, no bumper support (although not safe), and the silvia hood is lighter than the stock 240 hood.

That's easy, it's a shitload easier for me, as a lard-ass, to shave 30lbs off of my car by removing the A/C than to lose 30 lbs myself.
That doesn't mean I'm not trying to lose weight, I just think it's foolish to not do whatever you can that's free to make your car handle better, stop faster and accelerate quicker.
It's not like you even need AC or airbags anyway.

if you eat less, not only will you be reducing weight to your car when u drive it, but you'll be saving money by not buying as much food. so in the end, it's better than a free mod.

i think a driver should be able to justify a stripped interior by being able to drive that cars weight to the limit. otherwise youre just wasting time stripping it

Honestly, c'mon, what does the 240 weight? It's almost an ultra light sports car. The most important weight reductions are in the driveline. Removal of the AC, aluminum driveshaft (removal of the 2piece), lighter flywheel. Those will considerably change the drive of the car. Nit picking a 2600 lb car to get it down to 2400 lbs is great and all but it's not as important as what you're putting to the ground.

But it sucks being heavy. 6' 240lbs needs a custom rollcage, recaro spg xl (xl for a reason), and adds around 60 unwanted lbs of weight to the car that was meant for tiny asians (no offense) causes the car to scrape and my wallet to loosen up a bit.

This thread is actually very useful I don't want to lock it. But to brian, that is NOT a good reason to bump it.

a cf hood will definitely make a difference...the trunk not so much...depends if its a s14 or s13....also depends if your tracking the thing or ifs a daily driver
