hello everyone, im new to the forum so sorry in advance...lol

anyways, I just purchases a 240sx from this dude. When I was talking to him about it, he told me that before everything, the car was running choppy, seemed like it was misfiring or something. When running the engine was very rough at idle, and when you removed the oil fill cap, you could feel "air pressure" coming out of it. The exhaust had a little smoke on startup, but went away after a while. As of now, when i purchased the car, The engine was taken apart. The head is off of the block, timing chain is removed. The head seems to be in very good condition, 3 valves per cylinder all look in very good condition. The guy had the head tested for warping or valve damage. There was none (from what he said). Im not sure were to start. I have a chiltons manual, but its for a 1993 and up 240sx, KA24DE engine, mines a ka24e sohc 12 valve. I dont think its going to be any help except for maybe some of the electric wiring.

So what do u guys think? I want to get the car running and drivable before I go and buy an 2r20det, which is my ultimate goal.

do a ka24de swap and go ka-t...It will save you money in the long run

Ive been looking for prices of engine swaps, but all I seem to be able to find are the sohc ka's from $750-900 and SR20DET for $1200-2600. I dont know if any of the junkyards in the area have any dohc ka's, but if you could give me a reference online for one that would be awesome. Or does the KA24DE head bolt right up to the KA24E block? that would save me money because I wouldnt have to buy a complete new engine, just a dohc head. If I were to do that, I would likely rebuild the bottom end of my block pistons, rods maybe crank, new piston rings also.

wow u are getting ripped off for engines, u could find ka24de's for around $150

well, I havent bought an engine yet, so I havent really been ripped off. Im just looking for the best price. Those were all prices that I found online. Where could I get a KA24DE for $150? That would be badass, because I would have enough to purchass one this week. Was that a price for a junkyard?

o ya, I have another question. Will the 5 speed transmission from a 1990 ka24e mate up to the DE?

I seem to type this once a week, so here we go for the 467th time:

ALL 89-98 TRANSMISSIONS ARE THE SAME

Sensors are different per model, nothing else.

Junk yards aren't always your only choice. Post on local boards * know there is at least 4 of them out there* and check with shops like AMS for engine build up services *they are located in Chicago tho but have plenty of experience with KA's *

do the DOHC swap first before you attempt to go SR or RB and stay stock until you understand more than you do currently before attempting to modify it.

Welcome to the club of endless money wasted on 240's :D

CKAMC, I know plenty about engines, and rebuilding, turbo, ect. Ive owned 5 cars in my life, and have done work on all of them. I just dont know everything bout the s13 chassis. But im learning new stuff everyday. Thanks to u guys!

s13/s14's arent really like every other car out there... thats why I just recommend waiting.. plus its gets rather difficult if you go RB. Grab some service manuels online first and take a few skims thru them before continuing futher.
