View Full Version : Motor mounts now or later?

So my old KA24E is finally on the way out....to be replaced with another KA24E (to be turbo'ed!!!!)

The motor mounts that are in the car already aren't too bad, but I know I would save myself a shit load of work by getting Prothane mounts pressed in while the engine is out!

BUT!

Money is kinda low at the moment, after paying for tuition, rent, utilities, BLAH BLAH BLAH. So my question is, how difficult would it be to remove mounts one by one at a later time, pressing in a new insert, and putting the mount back in.

I know on my B13 its a total pain in the ass, but how difficult is it on a S13?

Do you know what your talking about? No one presses in urethane engine mounts for a 240sx, you can't do that, there is no way to do it. I suggest you take a good look at your engine mounts in your S13 .
You can buy custom aftermarket urethane mounts. I sell them. Or you can buy Nismo mounts, which are not as good :D but not bad. OR you can go the ghetto route and buy industrial urethane and inject it into your stock mounts. Though that is pretty ghetto.

Im in the same corner as you. Swaping my KAE for another to turbo, and my old mounts are shot...im thinking of the windo weld mod and heard alot of good things about them.

Ah! I guess I should have took a closer look! I was just going off how B13's are set up!

Well, still, how hard would it be to replace the mounts after the motor is put back into the car. Significantly harder I presume, but how much harder?

Home Depot.....

Construction Adhesive Polyurethane or Polyurethane Sealant
If you go with the construction adhesive do not buy "Liquid Nails" brand unless you want a little bit of give. Other wise get the other brand. As for the polyurethane sealant....buy the one that comes out black...it has a black tip. (One container will be enough to fill both motor mounts. Two will be enough to fill both motor mounts and the transmission mount)

Caulking gun.... if you don't have one.

Fill mounts with polyurethane and let cure for a few days or bake them in a toaster oven for several hours.

Sure it is ghetto but why would anyone care since the motor mounts aren't usually seen.

Let me think.....up to $20.00 vs. up to $200.00? Personally speaking......I could careless if people think its "Ghetto"....I have already filled one of my motor mounts.

It depends on what tools you have available to you.

Remove front wheels
Jack the engine up by the bell housing, and brace the bell housing with a jack stand.
Unbolt the top motor mount nuts (2 bolts on the driver's side and 1 bolt on the passenger side)
Unbolt the lower motor moutn nuts.......a breaker bar is helpful. (1 bolt on each side)
Lower, not drop, the crossmember.
Grab the mounts and remove from crossmember.

Side notes: I striped one of my driver's side motor mount nuts and will have to get a cut out tool to get it off. Using copious amounts of liquid wrench or pb blaster is helpful.

If you have the A/C system and the AIV unit still on the car you may have a tough time getting to the upper motor mount nuts.

How long would this be able to last?

I put in Nismo mounts when I replaced my engine. It was well worth it.

jgs engine mount here, totally worth it. While you are replacing your motor mounts, may as well get a tranny mount too. SPL for me there.

Well.... a lot. Not a nightmare but I'd kick my own ass for not doing it while the motor is out.

Replace engine mounts while the engine is out. This is the best time.

Replace all nuts and bolts and locking gaskets. Clean the engine and subframe as much as possible and give a light coat of rust inhibitor.

Why are Nissan people so damn lazy and cheap? It's an old piece of junk. You have to fix it or the engine will shake like crazy on worn out mounts.

It's not terribly hard to do with the engine in, but it's 1000 times easier with the engine out. I can literally swap engine mounts on the stand in 2 minutes.

if they are fine and you are low on cash. Then it is not a nessecity to upgrade. They are easier to swap when the engine is out, but not too much harder at all with it in.

i 2nd that. JSG for me cost $135 shipped and i use a peak parformance tranny mount. my sohc dont move and inch now. the JGS make a little more vibration in the car but nothing to major, 240sx arnt the quetest car to begin with.

o and you dont have to remove the front tires like some one said up there. it can all be done with the car sitting on the ground, you do need a jack to get the old ones out tho.

I have the Syko Performance mounts with a Nismo tranny mount and I'm happy with it. I kind of wish I had gotten some kind of urethane tranny mount because the Nismo seemed kind of soft in comparison to the engine mounts, but it firmed everything up and the price was good.

How long would this be able to last?

I can't say exactly how long it would last because it is only relative to:
A. How much driving you do.
B. How hard are you driving the car
C. What you do with the car.
D. What product you buy to fill the mounts (Polyurethane construction adhesive, polyurethane sealant, or window weld)
E. How you happen to fill them (Take on off the crossmember, or filled them while they were still on the crossmember) How long did you bake them or let them cure
F. Where the mounts somewhat dirt free before you filled them?

Anyway....as I stated it is all relative.....I have read one post saying that his particular fill job lasted a month others posts I have read have not stated how long they have lasted. If done to the best of your ability I am willing to bet they will last a few years. If you want to do more research on "impregnating" mounts search around on the Honda boards for more information.
