I think acid or something ate the paint up on my battery tray, and over the years prior to the car being in my ownership, moisture caused rust? Anyway the paint on the tray itself is pretty much useless chucks and chips, and what remains is pretty solid rust? Also my tie down and the rod are sorta the same. Def look like some sorta chemical caused it.
I plan to eventually get a sealed batt, but for now I wanna take care of this.
Also above the batteray like where a cooling panel would go, there is rust where something might have spilled too. Any suggestions on that? Other than that no other places under the hood have rust. Only on those locations.
I'd like to try not to damage the good surrounding paint as much as posisble too btw.
Thanks for any ideas
It's from battery acid. My bros battery exploded once because the people told him he didn't have to trickle charge it. Acid will cause rust very quickly.

Do what i did. Go at it with a sawzall and a hammer.
Then do some body work to cover the riviet holes, and paint over it.
Then relocate your batt to the trunk.

My battery tray was so rusted it was almost gone...so I cut the hole thing out and then some. My plan is to cut out all the rusted area, have someone weld in a new piece of alumnum and paint it if I ever get the time.
You can also trying sanding down all the rusted areas and then painting it with rustoleom or something. Rust sucks.

Mine wasn't so bad. I used a wirebrush to get the surface rust off and painted it.

Ah why didn't I think of wire brush. Sounds like the plan of attack. Funny how bad of a typo is in my title...I meant "pretty" lmao:duh: .
Yeah its not rusted to where it will break from weight of battery or anything. I chipped a lot away today and vac out, and re-installed batt for time being.
Plan to wire brush, and do rust paint I guess. Sound good.
Thanks for the idea. Also should I use wire brush on that metal in front of the radiator from fender to fender I mentioned. Its only that one side. Or would sandpaper be better, and then use a primer paint over that somewhat matches the white already on it (my car is pearl white)? Also would that screw anything up too, say if I ever repaint my car, and get under the hood painted as well?
Thanks

It doesn't take battery acid to cause the rust. Think about it, sand gets in there under the battery and the plastic tray over the metal and grinds the paint away in most cases. Add trapped moisture and you get rust. Even if you paint it after removing the existing rust it will eventually still come back.

Yeah true, I just feel I gotta do something though. Hey did you guys also have a plastic try that fits inside. Maybe I can use hot glue gun b/w the two. I dunno if thta type of glue softens up when wet or not, but I know in past use its easy to take off if you don't like. Also plan to get sealed batt.
