View Full Version : quiet exhausts

Hey, anyone know of some good exhaust that are close the the quietness of stock? I bought my ssAutochrome exhaust for my s14 when I was 18, but now I'm 21, and am kinda sick of the noise and being hassled by the popos.

I remember reading that thes RSR ExMag was a nice and quiet exhaust. Is there any way for me to just buy the muffler and no piping?

If you guys think it would be possible, I would really like to saw off my current exhaust hangers and muffler and just weld on a quiet exhaust (the ssAutochrome piping is just fine imo)

Let me know!

buy a couple mufflers and a resonator off of summit and try welding them on.

You can always have a muffler shop weld in a resonator.

just take it to a muffler shop and have them weld on a resonator....itll be a LOT cheaper than buying an exhaust and having to pay a shop to weld a muffler onto it. same price minus price of exhaust to just weld a resonator on it.

Circuit sport FTW, they only make it for the S13 though...maybe you can get their muffler and get some custom piping.

Custom is by far the most affordable, just like that guy said make it however you want.
I have JDM ST May large mandrel bent piping(resonator in the middle) coming out in stock location with a Magnaflow dual tip muffler. whole thing cost me a total of $270. Flows like hell is totally not obnoxious with my RB.
I know Muffler shops that can do 3 inch mandrel bends custom setups with large Magnaflow muffler for $250.

Yah.. custom. Put as many cats/resonators in it till you're satisfied with the sound.

do resonators hurt performance ?

btw i wanna ask tho
how bad will a silencer hurt on performance???

even with a couple resonators and a silencer, it wont ever get worse than stock.

resonators are NOT flow restricting.. they open up and absorb the sound waves.

drift freaq

silencers are flow restricting. They suck big time.

HKS Super Drager. I love mine. Not so quiet that you cant hear it but a cop wont give it a second look. Real deep rumble that sounds great.

Silencers ARE flow restricting, drft freq is correct. Infact on turbo apps, they are Very Restrictive. :duh:

custom set up ftw,

ive been next to a rb25 in a ecr33 chassis with a custom set up, so quiet, that you only hear air from the ass end, and turbo spool from the front end.

The exhaust I had on my car was a jic magic bullet, discountinued though. It was super quiet. It didnt even have a resonator it was just a bigass muffler and a canister for the rear. Quietest exhaust ive heard on s-chassis. I have an ss autochrome too and its a lot louder. I just use a buddy club spec 2 now cause i need the clearance.

BTW the new ssautochromes comes with a resonator now. Thing is its a lot bigger then the piping so it got dented too many times and kept getting a hole. Spec 2 is the best for clearance.

Gp Sports spec D pro is wat im using and its pretty quiet. i Put a Sard Hi low converter as well where the cat should be and its a lot less noisy now. The hi low converter is a bit expensive but worth the investment if u ask me. its quiet when driving daily and loud when u floor it.

As for me, im considering either a concept G or custom with 2.50 piping with cat/resonator and a cheap eBay can.

hmm, how can a resonator not restrict flow? i mean theres chambers and what not that must restrict flow somewhat.....?

ballr858
09-06-2006, 06:07 AM
i too wanna know if a resonator restricts airflow and/or hurts performance. i'm sure it would be minimal, but every little bit helps. my rsr ex-mag is louder that i thought it would be. getting a resonator welded on doesn't sound like a bad idea.

yokotas13
09-06-2006, 06:14 AM
are yuo making enough Flow with your tiny little t25 (or in some peoples cases t28) that the SMALL amount of flow that you sacrifice and will never notice is going to make a difference?
No. get it and quit complaining

redsuns3838
09-07-2006, 04:31 AM
yokotas13, a silencer on a SR engine, even pushing stock boost, is still noticable. atleast to me it is.

nemeguero, i thought resonators deal with airflow aswell, and would, every so slightly, restrict or slow down flow. arent there holes in resonator piping that lead to another chamber that would cause airflow to not be as, dynamic?

i could be wrong since all i know about resonators is limited to howstuffworks.com =P

Anyone know how loud a straight pipe from the cat would be on a KA? I'm thinking of making a custom one at a local muffler shop. I'm doing it because I need something nice and skinny so that I don't have to worry about my exhaust scraping the driveway everytime I go down it. It scrapes even when I angle out too...

You want a straight pipe from the catback on a n/a KA, and you live in California? Balls. I applaud you. lol

I was just going for a custom setup. I'm going to buy a cheap Megan Racing muffler, a resonator, and then take a trip to my local exhaust shop.

Do yourself a big favor, don't buy a Megan Racing muffler they suck ass. They are totally noisy fart cans. I had one on a car because it came with it. never again.
Just get yourself a Magnaflow with custom piping and a resonator.

P.S. Resonators that are sraight through like the big one on my St May piping do not restrict flow. The baffled resonators that are not straight through restrict flow.

Actually I watched a vid of a 3" rsr ex mag on a ka s14 before buying my exhaust, and it is WAY louder. I got mine off ebay, its made by rsr and has invidia on tip, and some sorta orido special stickers on it. I dunno much about the history of it, but its from japan, 3", and is slightly louder than stock at idle or moving. I have to really get on the pedal sometimes to know its there.

The muffler and resornator are both big and oval in shape. Seems Big Oval muffler and resonator do the trick. Def felt gains and no losses.

To clarify.. and as drift freaq said.. I meant a straight through resonator..
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/2725/resonatorvv9.jpg

So the resonant frequencies of the exhaust are quieted by altering the amplitude of their waves.

I love my fujitsubo legalis R. It's super quite on ka (3 inch piping) even at wot. Even though its quiet, it has a nice deep sound. I'd even consider it pretty quiet on with my RB.

Should've stayed later at the meet, and you would've heard the loudness that is my muffler-less single cam as I jumped on the freeway to go home. lol...

You want a quiet exhuast that flows well? I'd vote for an aftermarket header with a 3 inch mid-pipe, and a stock catback. Connect the mid-pipe and catback with a QTP electric cutout. Quiet when you want it to be, loud as f**k when you want some noisey flow. :D

If you'd rather not go that route, I'd suggest a Magnaflow and a resonator for the SSAutochrome piping. That'd help alot.

I disagree. I'm running a 3" Megan Drift Spec catback on a turbo app. It's relatively quiet and has a nice low rumble. So far so good. I'd recommend it for the price.

HELL FLUCKIN' YEAH! I need my shizz loud. My exhaust right now (I think its 5Zigen?) is wayy too quiet, and sounds like a fat piece of crap.. Then again, its made for a turbo. I'll probably save it till I actually have one.. I want something loud, but at the same time compact. Which I've heard that a straight pipe is quite effective in these areas. :wiggle:

Someone want to sell one to me?

Then get a buddy club spec 2. Good fit, good clearance, sounds great, slip joint for easily disconnect too.

a resonator will only keep it quiet at idel as soon as he accelerates or steps on the gas its pretty much the same sound with out one.

Get an Aero Turbine Muffler with 3"inlet and 3"outlet. Get the resonator as well i am running 2 on my 2JZ welded on and get a custom 3" mandrel setup from a muffler shop. The Aeroturbine sounds so good too. Add the tip too! Give it a shot.

Not true, they can keep sounds out under "moderate" throttle.. when you mash.. a resonator still helps, but looses efficiency at sound deadening.
