Hi,
I'm leaning towards purchasing a Sr20det for my S14. I'll purchase the clip on summer 07'. Meanwhile, I am doing a research on the motor. My plans are to spend between 3-5,000 on a basic swap. My question is: How do you guys feel after spending between 3-5,000 on a Sr20det swap? Any regrets or was it well worth it? Thanks, Mario

well worth it
5k is a good amount
can get a lot of stuff fixed/replaced and upgraded

I have about $5,000 into my swap (s13 b/t clip -$2,400 through a good importer friend). with like $300 in stuff like heater hoses and lots random little things it was a $3,000 swap... but i got carried away and spent another $2,000 on performance parts... the thing actually scared me the first time it hit boost. I love it, best $5,000 i have ever spent!

I would say that for the average joe schmoe, $5000 is about the minimum for a reliable track ready SR swap.

$2500 swap package
$300 koyo
$400 clutch
$300 seals, gaskets, water pump, and radiator hoses
$200 motor mounts
$350-500 gauges
$100 downpipe
$200-$500 exhaust
$50 oil and filter

Optional

$350-$800 FMIC
$200 BOV

These are all rough estimates and there are better deals to be found but I'd say this is the bare minimum that I would do when swapping in an SR. FMIC for people tracking and sidemount for the budget minded person who only drives the car on the street.

NO SR20.

SR20 compared to a KA-T...KA-T has WAY more torque.

Dont knwo why every one is so crazy over SRs.

ha anyway in summer or 07? damn dude theres not that much to research about the sr, its pretty basic, and btw if u do research trust me youll spend a lot less than 5k and end up swapping it yourself and using the rest for good upgrades

This topic is discussed a lot... but look into all options if you havnt already... you can BUILD a KA-T to handle more hp/tq for about the same as a SR swap with basic mods. In the end the built KA will be faster and have a better torque range for the street.
I know I know SR vs. KA thread blah blah just giving my opinions since I was also in the same situation but am now going ka-t... for now... unless mine is bad for some reason

But if your really set on getting an SR go for it.

Id also recommend oil pump, water pump, in addition to replacing gaskets.

well put it this way, you get what you pay for! around here its about 1500 install and then 1800 for engine and tranny then your looking 1000 for fmic kit plus gauges and bov and your looking close to 5k otd.

About the same here. $1k for a stock sr install, then between $1700-$2k for the engine. Then all of the misc.stuff.

Uhh...summer of 2007. :duh:

Absolutely do the swap yourself. You don't need a lift, or 15 mechanic friends, or a grease pit, or anything else. You can rent or borrow an engine hoist and do it on jackstands easily. The experience and knowledge you'll gain about the motor by doing the swap yourself is invaluable. You'll know where everything is, what extension to use to get to that bolt, etc. Plus, if you're not a tool, you can probably find some Nissan guys around you to help you do it for a case of beer. :)

As for regretting spending the money. I certainly don't regret the money I've spent on the SR, because I paid a premium for the ease of the swap and relative reliability of a factory turbo motor. KA-T is great, and I've helped a friend with his install, but no matter how great that motor is or how much power it makes, it still is a bit of a hassle getting everything to fit and clear properly.

Bah, I'm rambling, do the swap yourself.

i can not justify paying somebody to swap an sr. i mean the car was made for a damn SR. jeez
as a matter of fact i cant justify letting anybody work on my car at all. people make this shit seem way too overly complex for what it is.

ANYWAY so much for this thread

Sorry guys,
I guess my post wasn't clear:hammer: . I am set on getting an SR. My question was directed towards people who own a SR. KA-t :gives: haha j/k. Anyways, Did anyone regret spending 5,000 dollars on a SR swap? Or was it worth every penny? I don't want to spend the money just to regret it in the end. Thanks, Mario

You could if you didnt have the means to, like me. I dont have garage and/or driveway space at all. I cant whip out a hoist and do a engine swap in my apartment parking lot. Might be different if I had a lot of experience and was sure I could do the swap in like 1 full day...and maybe had help.

yep... some of you guys remember we don't all have driveways. neighbors tend to frown on half completed engine installs sitting in front of their houses.

what type of suspension/brakes do you got?

im just sayin tho there are ways to do it yourself even without a place to do it at home, or a hoist. I called a few local shops and they rented me out a bay for $25 a day. Now I know 25 a day is cheap and it was a shitty shop but its concrete floor and a roof which is good enough for me. I use my own tools and their air and hoist. Give a week at max thats 175. IMO thats much better than getting ripped for 1k+.

To answer the question tho - Zero regrets. spent 2k on a s14 SR and like 3.5k for other shit for it.

for fucks sake piss off with the kat vs. sr vs. ur mom vs. whatthehelleverelse

Just be sure you get a clip. It will be a little bit more work removing two engines, but you see exactly how everything should go and have spare parts for everything in your engine bay. Also, you are almost guaranteed to have every part needed to do the swap beside hoses and stuff to convert to LHD.

yes it was worth the money. but dont expect it to be worth it right away. its worth it after you start upgrading and the car gets fast. stock SR really doesnt go that fast.

also remember to save up some more on reserve in case stuff breaks because it does...

but good thing most parts are interchangeable with u.s parts, and even the jdm stuff are easily located by import shops

To answer your first question::gives: haha. I'm just being realistic. I'm too poor to purchase one right now:duh: . But I'll have 5,000 dollars to spend on summer 07'. I figured it's never early to start researching:D .

Seems like people have no regrets spending 5,000 dollars on a SR swap. Now, I am really set on purchasing one. Yummm...SR20DET:wackit:.

I have no regrets whatsoever. i got my s14 shell for 2,700, and a jdm clip last summer for 3,300. seems like the prices have been going up since. i spent around another 5k for additionnal parts for having a swap that would be reliabile and good for upgrading later (clutch, fmic, etc). A lot of the parts I tried my best to get used or the cheapest possible price via specials on the nissan websites. But to answer your question, I think if you got a redtop motor for cheap, 5k would be decent. 3k would not be enough by far. Youd barely have even 1k in parts to play with after you get your swap/clip.

I would have spent more for a rebuild (and will prob end up doing so later), but my budget was limited and i had to get the car running, since it was stuck at my mechanics for a while.

From a more personal perspective, I see it two ways. On one hand, I am very happy with my car right now. I think ultimately the results were worth it. However, I was foolish in the beginning that i didnt do enough research before deciding to go the SR route. It just ended up being a lot bigger $ pit than I thought.

I was just browsing honda-tech one day, saw a 96 240 shell for sale, then looked up the cost of sr swaps, and thought it to be reasonable without researching more on the other parts. I thought, i should have a fun car for under $6k, i should do it! It ended up being almost double that initiall estimate, b/c i didnt factor in other variables necc (at least to my standards) for the swap. So while i do like the car in the end, it has been frustrating that the costs seem so much higher. Even doing the suspension and brakes are like other mini projects, but thats another can of worms.

yes it was worth the money. but dont expect it to be worth it right away. its worth it after you start upgrading and the car gets fast. stock SR really doesnt go that fast.

this prob more subjective than anything else, but I was pretty satisfied with my sr swap after getting a ebc, and boosting at 10 lbs. Before the ebc, at stock boost, i agree things were a bit dissapointing. i personally think that its the car's suspension and brakes that need a lot more attention, which becomes even more apparent when you're making the power even from a stock SR.

I spent close to $10,000 on my last Sr 89 240sx(thats including sus., ext.int. and a bunch of shit that broke.)
three years ago just to get totaled last year(long story).
Anways on my second 89 240sx looking for a clip again,
this time i doing the swap my self trust me on this one.
You have more resources now then back then. So yes is worth every penny.
Go for it and if you have space do it yourself.
You will be glad you did later when its time to get under the hood. Peace:D
