When i purchased my car the original owner happened to not be very good taking care of her car so the driver side of the door has tons of chips from her opening and dinging other cars.... that and shes gotten the 240sx dinged many times too... :smash: well anyways ive always figured that the chips was the paint chipped off and under it was black primer so it wouldnt be rusting.. but today after 7-8months that ive owned it i just realized these chips started developing small rust in the chips.. and i think its developing from the outside so i dont need to cut any metal... or atleast i hope... and i was wondering if ya'll could help guide me on removing the rust the correct way with out damaging most of the paint around it ... and then i will use touch up paint and clear coat it after all is said and done.. i just need help on how to approach this so i dont make any stupid simple mistakes and make it worse of a problem.
Heres a pic.. of the chips http://media.livedigital.com/pictures/f8/0b/f80b22d30e93a1e3f855dc374ca1da22_rs.JPG
I've have done googles and searches on this forum and i've learned few of the steps of how to approach this.. but I think i need someone who've actually had experienced with this help out. Just trying to get rid of the occurring rust before it gets real bad and corrode the metal and starts eating the metal under the paint.
Please any help is good!!
If ya'll could just set me in the right direction with materials and steps to do this. Thanks a ton!

you can put naval jelly on it if you want. its a pink jelly chemical that turns rust to not rust. then put some nail polish over it or somthing
or you could just leave it, it dosent matter, you are in texas right? you could seriously leave that exposed for like 10 years before you would see a paint bubble. its just surface rust, its not going to eat your car. besides its only on the door, not structural, and if somehow by demon magic your door was turned to solid rust, you could just buy another door.

naval jelly huh... does that really work? i'll have to try it.
the old fashioned non fancy way is to sand it off, clean it, primer and paint.

I'd be worried about the naval jelly screwing up the surrounding paint. Do a google search on "how to touch up paint", and you will find lots of guides. One that I read (I just searched this very topic 1 month ago) had links to a 'sandpaper pencil' type thing. It had an abrasive tip on it, but was pointed for precise control. Use that to sand the rust out, and then touch up the paint.

hmm sounds like e-coat to me. shit that comes on replacement panels like door skins and fenders and can be welded through. Go to advance or autozone and buy a spot sanding pen. its like a pen with millions of fiberglass strands used for the tip. looks like this.

Maybe i can tape the area off and only leave the chips exposed paste on some naval jelly, let it do its thing for a few min... then wipe it off sand off any residue and i guess primer paint and clear coat it... or nail polish it for temp haha. Thanks to all response

i've used those sanding pens before. um wear gloves. the fiberglass gets into your skin if you don't.
its still not that precise. you need to sand out the rust spot and the paint around it because the rust spreads outwards under the paint.

nah dont tape anything off, you gotta featheredge that shit so its level.
another alternative is to just get those plastic strips that go on the edges of the door skin to protect against chips and shit. they are kinda ugly, but so is rust
