ok I have a s14 sr20det vtc blacktop motor. when i start it up after It has been sitting for a while (cold). It makes a soft rattling noise. I've have 2 of these s14 motors. And each has done this. Any ideas? Thanks

i sort of have that problem with my S15 SR20. it doesn't rattle when i turn it over, it rattles the first time i blip the gas then it runs as smooth as a baby's bum...
never figured out why it only rattles the first blip of the gas then goes away...problems i've heard it could be....

Not sure if it may be the timing chain and rockers that may be sounding like that until they are lubed by the oil pump bringing oil to the head. Mine has it as well on my stock P11 SR and the S14 not on the S15 though.

Its most likely the slack adjusters, not err... adjusting slack. They need to fill up with oil first. They rattled after i did a head gasket and they were drained. Also, when i forgot to replace the turbo oil return hose. They also rattled a bit when after starting the engine when it has been standing for a while.
